Leigh East 22 v 34 Leigh Miners
Leigh Miners booked themselves a place in the last eight of the Conference Challenge Cup yesterday afternoon after a strong second half performance against local rivals Leigh East gave them a 34-22 victory at a packed Ledgard Avenue in the second “Street Of Origin” of the year, ending Leigh East’s four game derby winning run against Miners. It was the visitors who made the brighter start and was on the score sheet after only a few minutes when Scott O’Brien went in under the sticks to score, Jonny Youds converting to give the score 6-0. East replied on fifteen minutes when Kieron Dainty finished off a well worked move against his former club to score at the side of the posts, Adam Holland converting to tie the scores at 6-6. After the try it was all Leigh East for the next twenty odd minutes having Miners on the back foot and making good yards, Adam Holland put East in front when he went through a gap to race to the line scoring on the right, Holland converting to give the score 12-6. The home side were in again soon after when Dainty went in for his second of the game under the sticks, Holland again converting, When Danny Kilshaw dropped his shoulder and went in for a fourth East try it looked like Leigh East would ease to victory as they led the game 22-6 and were well on top as the half come to a close. Miners gave themselves hope right on half time when young half back Josh Ward intercepted Danny Kilshaw’s pass to race a good sixty yards to score under the posts, Youds adding the extras to give the half time score 22-12 in Leigh East favour.
The try just before the break lifted Miners as it was them who were the stronger team in the second half controlling field position making East play a lot of rugby coming of their own line and the pressure told early on when Scott O’Brien shrugged off a few defenders to score on the right, Youds converting to bring Miners within four points of their hosts at 22-18. After a good spell of pressure attacking the East line Miners retook the lead when centre Martin Lewis scored out on the left, Youds converting to give the score 24-22. As time wore on Leigh East had a little spell of possession in the Miners half but that came to nothing as Miners finished strong with MOM Scott O’Brien scoring two more tries to take his tally for the game to four, Youds landing one conversion from the final two tries to give Miners a 34-22 victory and the local bragging rights for the next three weeks before the two sides meet again in the league at Twist Lane in early August.
Next week Miners are away to Siddal in the League.
