The Jamaica Rugby League Association has announced the 17 players that will face Canada at the Lamport Stadium in Toronto on Saturday, July 21 at 7pm. The Reggae Warriors as the national team is known, will battle the Wolverines for the second annual Caribbean Carnival Cup, currently held by Canada after their 40-10 victory last year. The squad will depart the island on Thursday and return on Sunday.
Canada is currently positioned 21st in the Rugby League International Federation’s World Ranking while the Reggae Warriors are 23rd.
National Coach Romeo Monteith expects a tough challenge ahead, “Several boys struggled last year with the conditions affecting our ability to breathe properly. The air is colder and thinner there and we really suffered. It will be the same this year and our players have to be mentally tough and adjust quickly. Also, our boys will play on Astro Turf for the first time, which is a new and unknown element”.
The Jamaican squad has been going through their paces at the University of the West Indies and GC Foster College and will feature 16 domestic based players. The ‘outsider’ will be Orlando Jones who is based in Canada. “We are confident that the players we have selected will make us proud,” Monteith added.
Meanwhile, several national team members were in action on Saturday in the Jamaica National Club Championship where three games were played. Roy Calvert scored two tries to lead the Duhaney Park Red Sharks past Spanish Town Vikings 40-5. Omar Jones was crucial in Vauxhall’s 42-16 win over Portmore Suns and Renaldo Wade watched from the side line as his team Maxfield Rookie Star Steppers upset the Jamaica Defence Force 38-26 at Up park camp.

"Perhaps it would be better that future criticism of sports be made on the narrow basis of what is being discussed, without reference to other sports, unless those sports offer a solution to the problem in hand." - Brian 'Pigface' Moore
"What happens in rugby union? A player takes the ball, moves forward a little and gets tackled. A whole load of players then roll about on the ground. Pheep! The referee gives a penalty." - Simon Barnes

Very gratifying, especially when you remember how the original Canadian Rugby League were left out in the cold. Rugby League is lucky they didn't just permanently give up on the game in disgust.

Nothing to Canada from RLIF in 2011. Don't know if there was anything from the RLEF (if they even give out grants)I don't know how much external aid they are getting, but there does seem to be plenty of good signs in all sorts of parts of the world.

There's some tremendous development work happening that is going largely unnoticed.
It's only unnoticed tim by people who never look. Plenty of people on the main forum claim to be fans of the international game and rarely if ever post anything on this forum. RL apathy strikes again.

This match is being shown in the UK on Premier Sports tonight at 18:30!
Premier were supposed to show one of the games from the Atlantic WC qualifiers last year but never did. I hope this isn't another case of the same.

Not any longer according to OSG, now apparently is 'Dragons v Storm' from NRL.
Just sent this to Premier Sports & will update if/when I recive a reply;
According to your programme guide on screen this match was due to be broadcast on the channel at 1830 Monday 30th July. I see it has now been replaced by the Dragons/Storm NRL game. Can you kindly inform me why the change ?
If the broadcast is only delayed, can you please inform me when this game will be shown ?

Yes this is correct. There was an issue with sending over the game. It comes via an FTP (file transfer) and they were not ready to send it in time for it to go out tonight. It is actually coming in at the moment so we will schedule later in week.
Let me confirm in due course,

Great to hear the strength of feeling. Stopped short of blaming the ref but some strong views expressed!!
