SWEDEN READY FOR RUGBY LEAGUE NORDIC CUP CHALLENGE

A new-look Sweden are set to face Norway in Gothenburg this Saturday in the next round of the 2012 Nordic Cup, according to Sverige RL Chairman Scott Edwards.

“We held a training session in Skåne recently, a county in southern Sweden that is new to rugby league,” he said. “From that 16 new, younger players made it into the squad and the boys are very excited.”

“Myself and Christian Skogholm will be the only two players to have been involved in all four Sweden internationals. There are a number of previous players that are still in the running for final selection but the southern trail has created some competition for places.”

He added, “Having not met Norway for two years and not having won an international to date we are really hoping to perform this time.”

Last time out in the competition, an inexperienced Sweden XIII lost 122-8 away to Denmark in April.

SWEDEN
Niklas Bjork, Jerry Cort, Filip Karafiat (Boras Ravens), Cristoffer Andreasson, Niklas Ekdahl, Alexander Kanani, Peter Wikstrom (Gothenburg Lions), Maake Fakaosoifolau, Jim Meredith (Helsingborg), Adam Borg, Sebbe Hylander, David Lonsjo (Lugi), Paul Briggs. Jonathon Elamzon, Harold Konsberg, Oscar Larsson, Rolo Leishman (Malmo), Hjalmar Edensten, Tobias Rorstam (Pingvin), Scott Edwards, Darren Cudmore, Christian Skogholm (Spartacus Reds)

Good luck to the Swedish team. It's a long and difficult road and I hope they can succeed.

This was the first RL game that I ever went to after discovering it just last year, but I'll try to sum it up.

It took Sweden a while to get settled and Norway were 10-0 up within five minutes. At this stage thoughts of Denmark's 122-8 win over Sweden back in April must have crossed through a lot of minds.

Sweden did not give up and went close to get on the board after about fifteen minutes, but lost the ball and Norway increased their lead to 16-0 a minute later.

The Swedes then got on the board, but Norway scored two more before half time to make it 28-4.

The second half was a more even affair. The tries came early with Norway scoring two unconverted tries on either side of a converted try for the Swedes.

Both teams defended well in the second half and there were quite a few opportunities for both teams. Sweden twice stopped Norway at the last second after runs from the half way line.

The big difference between the sides I think were that Norway has a domestic league, whilst the Sweden team is picked from players that play Union regularly. Some of the Sweden players of course have a background in RL and hopefully the game will continue to grow here.

Welcome to the game, I hope you get more chances to see it soon.

And if, on looking round these forums, you get the impression that people don't like the sport enough, don't be put off, they probably like it too much :)

Thanks. I'm hoping to be able to travel to a Super League game during the 2013 season and possibly also a couple of ones in the World Cup.

I think on the International board, you're generally OK. But if you're new, don't stray to the NCL board!
