Leigh Miners 52 v 6 Wath Brow Hornets
Leigh Miners booked themselves a place in the last four of the Conference Challenge Cup yesterday afternoon with a 52-6 victory at Twist Lane against joint NCL Premier Division leaders Wath Brow Hornets, Miners will now take on Division One title contenders Bradford Dudley Hill away in the semi-final on Saturday 1st September. It was the visitors who started the brighter of the two teams in the opening few minutes and they found themselves in front when Miners let a cross field kick bounce, Wath Brow’s centre collecting the ball to score, the try being converted to give the score 6-0. Miners responded with a try out on the left from centre Ross Bradley after ten minutes and from then on it was all Miners, scoring again from the restart, Standoff Liam Coleman breaking the line and after a few passes Martin Lewis scored out on the right, Jonny Youds converting to give the score 10-6.Danny Jackson scored a third home try when he was put in on the right by Martin Lewis, Lewis scored his second try of the match soon after, again on the right to put Miners 18-6 in front. With Miners being on the front foot they could have quiet easily been further in front if they had took all their chances, a few times blowing good opportunities to score by forcing poor passes when they should have just took the tackle and gone again the next play. Two further tries followed before half time, firstly from Adam Thomason on the right followed by a try from winger Sean Pendlebury, Youds adding the extras for both tries to give Miners a commanding 30-6 half time lead.
The second half started simular to the first with Wath Brow starting the brighter and they found themselves playing against twelve men for ten minutes when Miners had Dave Rowlands sin binned for a high tackle. After soaking up the pressure on their own line Miners worked their way up field for Scott O'Brien to break the line to send in Jonny Youds under the sticks, Youds converting his try to give the score 36-6. Miners hit the forty point mark soon after when Sean Pendlebury intercepted a lose Hornets pass to race the length of the pitch to score. Young Josh Ward was next to score, dropping his shoulder to go in on the left, Youds converting to give the score 46-6. Youds grabbed himself a brace by scoring the tenth and final try and converting to take his goal tally to six to give the final score 52-6.
