I was totally with the switch to summer, from a players perspective summer rugby seemed to be the way forward. Faster rugby means better games, bigger crowds and more support etc, the rfl has done a very good professional job in my opinion but as much as it pains me to say it, it isn't working SO FAR.
I know people will say its early days and so on, but the interest in the Ncl seems to have suffered, players don't seem to be really bothered. Previously players would put rugby and theyre promotion hopes before a stag do or party or day out with the kids. Now it seems we are very rarely putting out the same team. I hope it gets sorted as the Ncl is best league and would hate to see top class teams move away from it

Whats going on and is the feeling same throughout the Ncl?

Totally agree there biffdog, it seems players in the summer have a lot of commitments other than rugby league, and I'm pretty sure every club in the ncl isn't putting out the same team or a regular team week in week out, my club saddleworth have certainly struggled as I'm sure many others have

Most clubs are the same, however I think some just dont want to state their feelings for worry of getting a bad name for their club.

We have changed team every week by a minimum for 4/5 players, tomorrow we have 12 unavailable for our ( Oulton ) trip to West Hull - our 2nds played last night as 80% of them on a stag do this weekend. At minute we have 12 players commited to travelling tomorrow.

Tommorow we (Hunslet warriors) have the majoroty of our 1st team squad unavailable to play from a stag do and injurys and it's a game we could really do with winning for our promotion hopes. We asked Milford to change the date but they refused, which you can't really blame them for doing as they themselves are chasing promotion and if they've got a chance to play a weakened warriors side why not.
It's just a shame that teams have these events during the summer and are not playing a full team week in week out, and therefore players are loosing interest in the game because they can't fully commit all season.
But at the end of the day we are amateurs, and are not getting paid so why not go on hol etc during the season??

It's a tough one.

Could be getting worse for the next 6 weeks as the kids are off school and families will be going away more.

It will be like watching the second teams as i understand Milford have again got 8 first team players un-available for selection, due to holidays and injuries.

But like the Warriors, both teams will not come on here slagging the summer season but get on with it and still be able to turn out a second team.

Milford have to get on with it after the influence they had in the NCL changing seasons.

And before you get on your horse a certain Milford committee members name has cropped up at every NCL game I've been to this season.

How the hell can one committee man from Milford influence the NCL into the change to summer, when a democratic vote by all delegates was taken in Leigh.
The point i was makeing is that certain clubs have benefitted with the change in that they have now got large numbers of players training/playing and up for selection each week.

Maybe they need to do as the Cumbrian league has done and build a two or three week break into the middle of the season so that family holidays and any future stag do's (assuming the bride will agree to the wedding date falling into this window ;) ) etc. can be accomodated.

Some good ideas have been thrown about on this forum recently, this being one of them. i liked somebody's idea of later starts to encourage people to stay on after the game for events etc. Not sure how viable an idea it is of course, but from an outsider's perspective whose played a lot of summer rugby and cricket, it could certainly work if driven by clubs properly.

Things must be bad when some of your coaching staff (Billy) turned up at Milford instead of going to you game.
p.s. They enjoyed the game and prefer Summer Rugby.

To Marauder
I was not going to reply to your slurr on my club Milford Marlins but has a committee member I thought it was my duty to reply. Milford Marlins Like all the other NCL clubs went and Listened to what the NCL management had to say about the switch to summer. These remarks where then taken back to our club which we firstly discussed at committee level before taking it to all our players from under 16s upwards. Our player and committees choice was a massive vote to switch to summer. ( Please note the Committee member of the Milford Marlins I think you are refering to was not present when the players voted on the switch which actually was 100% vote yes for summer. I don't know where you get that Milford Marlins influenced other member clubs of the NCL to switch to summer comes from. I am the Milford Delegate that goes to all the NCL meetings and I dont remember me saying to much on the switch it was mainly the NCL management that put the case across. Just for the record I will confirm had the vote of the switch been a NO vote Milford Marlins would have remained a winter club within the NCL. For you to think that I could influence all the other strong committee members of the other NCL clubs is ridiculous. So May I suggest you get your facts straight before you start slandering the names of other clubs. I think that the Milford Committee member you maybe refering too may have had a part in the switch to summer of the Yorkshire Juniors but that was has is role on the Yorkshire Juniors management and not has a Milford Committee man. I will just like to point out also that if you think that the Milford Marlins are run by one man you are very far off the mark and you don't know the strong and outspoken characters that actually run our club.

I predict that players careers will be cut even shorter with the hard dry grounds.

Obviously I've hit the correct nerve because I never once named the person who's name keeps cropping up. No smoke without fire as they say.

The idea that one BDH committee member and one Milford committee member has voodoo powers to convince 28 out of 38 clubs to vote for summer and 37 from 38 to switch then convince 4 new sides to join and 18 more to apply for the following season is ludicrous.

It was not that you named or did not name anyone the thing I was refering to was the fact you said the Milford club influenced clubs to switch to summer. I also said I May agree with you that a member of the Milford committee could have influenced the Yorkshire juniors to switch to summer but that was in his role has a yorkshire junior Management official NOT A MARLINS OFFICIAL!
