Noticed tonight it was dark at just gone half past nine.

I'd say in a couple of weeks time we will be needing the floodlights on at training,

We've been able to train midweek for the best part of 5 months. Hard to do that in the old winter season without floodlights.

Most sides did seem to manage for over 100 years in the traditional season as do soccer (Our national sport) and Rugby Union (The biggest of the two codes)

Huge capacity these days in terms of astro-turf for football which is not a good surface for rugby. two RU clubs in our area, one didnt train for 2 months over the winter (saving their pitch for games as the winter had taken such a toll), the other trained at an alternative venue in south Manchester becasue of the state of their fields.

Winter training for just open age was costing c. £2,300 per winter on a very poor surface. with junior sides, teh costs would go up probably another £1,000 - £2,000 so well over £3k and maybe even over £4k in total. even with the season switched, will cost us £1,300 - £2,000 to train when dark although that will include junior training too.

the money has been far better spent on starting junior sides...

Another good reason to stay Summer, financially benificial.

We've had training lights for over 30 years and never paid a penny for the electric, even if we had to pay the modern lighting we are installing will only cost a couple of quid (Less than one pint) an hour to run The new 10 metre lighting columns have only cost £100 (DMBC streetlighting) and thats for the delivery, the lights have been donated by the company that one of our club just happens to be the engineer on their management team.

Not got the time to be on the BARLA board at the moment but thats an idea i'll look into - I'd definately oversee my little bit by the rules.

Jim used to support summer rugby league a couple of years ago.

Lets get it correct, Jim is not against summer rugby league, Jim saw what and how the RFL was doing things a few years ago and I didn't like it, many of the rants i've made have either come true or about to, I have to say I didn't expect the next round of cuts to hit (without checking) 40 development jobs, but how I see it the RFL must now think they have served their purpose.

With the expansion areas now being allowed to control (Has most of the funding been withdrawn?) themselves do you look at it as an improvement on the RLC or a step backwards bearing in mind BARLA allowed them to control themselves.

North East massive improvement
Midlands and South East slight improvement but the format is wrong
South West has gone backwards apart from the 2 bigger clubs that play elsewhere

The fatal flaw in the RLC was to hold back the game in midlands, London and north east to stay in line with the more flaky east, SW, Wales and Scotland divisions. Regrettably the RFL have retained the HJ Trophy setting a ridiculously early finish to the season.

We trained last winter at the Trinity Academy Thorne and had upto 50 odd training and all the lads had to do was pay £1 each.

Last winter wasn't that bad anyway.
