I have to admit I do enjoy a good stat or two in my Rugby League.
There's a couple of things I don't quite understand in the figures produced in the centre pages of League Express each weekend.
Take this week's edition Wigan v Hull.
There were 120+107 ptbs =227.
Yet there were 199+210 carries = 409. Really? But there were only 37 offloads. So does standing and passing count as a carry? But not for the acting half-back?
Also there were 257+288 tackles=545 as well as another 65 missed tackles making almost 3 every single tackle when I'd've thought nearer 2 would be the average.
Anoraky I know. Can anyone offer any insight? Ta.

all I can say is that I hope you emerge, pale, drawn and blinking into the daylight tomorrow. My turn for the butties.

All seems reasonable.
A carry would count as a ball-handling episode, not sure if that would count if someone passed the ball immediately (say from AHB), or before a kick, but 1.8 carries per tackle, or maybe 8-10 carries per set (not sure the average number of tackles in a set, I'd guess about 4.5) seems fair with three hit-ups, a couple of spreads of about three passes down the line, then a run and kick.
As for the 545 tackles, I'd assume this means completed tackles, so 2.4 men per tackle - most hit-ups will have three players tackling, wider action will have 1 or 2 tacklers. Doesn't make sense to include missed tackles in this average.

Put that way, it does seem reasonable. Ta. I'd assumed carry meant hit up which seemed disproportional.
