Ed Moses. Pure class and consistency.

"Perhaps it would be better that future criticism of sports be made on the narrow basis of what is being discussed, without reference to other sports, unless those sports offer a solution to the problem in hand." - Brian 'Pigface' Moore
"What happens in rugby union? A player takes the ball, moves forward a little and gets tackled. A whole load of players then roll about on the ground. Pheep! The referee gives a penalty." - Simon Barnes

Good call that Futtocks. In some ways it's a shame he starred at something of a "niche" event and doesn't quite get the recognition he would if he'd been straight 400m but as you say - complete class and devastatingly consistent.
My pick might be a little later than the OP had in mind - but I can't look past Michael Johnson. To win gold in both the 200m and 400m at the same Olympics is a feat I don't think I'll live to see again, and he still holds a ridiculous number of the fastest ever times for the 400m (including the current world record).

It's not a question of coming down to earth, Mr Duxbury. Some of us, Mr Duxbury, belong in the stars.

Not only that, he has since become a superb TV pundit and a pretty good presenter, if you saw the documentary he did just before the Games. And he probably deserves an Oscar for the way he conceals any hint of contempt for the wretch Inverdale.

Just had a memory pop into my head after all these years. In 'Superstars' they used to have an obstacle course, including a high wall with a rope. Technically a climbing event, Ed Moses just ran up the wall, grabbed the top and vaulted over. Unbelievable athleticism.

My feeling was then and is now that if you were anything other than Ovett (of the three) than you're a bit suspect.
Cheer up, RL is actually rather good

Tom Mckean, Kriss Akabusi, Brian Whittle, Yvonne Murray, Liz McColgan, Todd Bennett, Mike Mcfarlane, Clarence Callinder
There was Cruz the Brazilian who to a middle distance gold but surely Said Aouita (spl) should be mentioned in the same breath as any of the above.

Great runner, but tactically a disaster area.

I have always disliked Coe, far too smug. Needs a good slap.
No one will ever surpass the only and only Francis Morgan Thompson.
Kris Akbussi once came to our house.

Depressingly (for me at any rate) I raced against Cram at schools/club level
My wife complains I selfishly stop her fulfilling her true ambition -

Yes, I know. However, the three nominated runners achieved success as full time athletes. Their contemporary, Peter Elliott, and near-contemporary, John Whetton, did it whilst holding down a job. I wouldn't like to see them forgotten.

I went on holiday to st Ives in the 80s and stayed in a BB where the owner refused to have a TV. we wanted to know how the olympics were doing as did the bloke sitting behind us, he was Peter Elliots first coach.
