Skirlaugh 10 v 18 Leigh Miners

Leigh Miners picked up two more important league points when they beat relegation threatened Skirlaugh 18-10 on a warm afternoon on Humberside to lift them back into a top six playoff position. It was a disciplined first half performance from Miners both in attack and defence with high completion which was backed up by eager defence which kept their host scoreless during the opening forty minutes. In the opening few minutes Skirlaugh had a player harshly sent to the sin bin for kicking the ball away after the ball had gone dead, Miners had to work hard to break the twelve man home defence down and they broke the dead lock just before Skirlaugh were due to return to a full thirteen when Josh Ward split open the defence to put Jonny Youds through a gap who drew the full back to send a supporting Aaron Gorton in under the posts, Youds converting to give the score 6-0. Miners increased their lead when Lee Gittins put Liam Coleman through a gap from a scrum, Coleman racing a good 60 yards to score at the side of the posts, Youds again converting to put Miners 12-0 in front. Skirlaugh did a lot of attacking near the end of the half forcing a number of back to back sets putting a lot of the pressure on the Miners line, but with Miners defending strongly the home side were unable to post any points before the half time break.

Miners made the perfect start to the second half when Liam Coleman went through a gap in the opening set of the half to send Jonny Youds racing into score from half-way, Youds landing the conversion under the posts to give the score 18-0. After making a bright start that’s as good as it got for Miners has they kept inviting Skirlaugh into a comeback, turning the ball over to cheaply inside their own half in what was a scrappy second period. Skirlaugh scored their first try on the hour mark and a second followed a few minutes later, bringing the score to 18-10 to get the crowd right into the game trying to cheer them onto victory. Miners did enough during the closing stages to see the game out with enthusiastic defence which they displayed throughout to move them up into fifth position in the NCL.

Next week Miners take on Thatto Heath Crusaders at Twist Lane, Kick off 2-30pm.

MINERS TEAM = J. Youds, S. Pendlebury, R. Ravenscroft, M. Lewis, R. Monaghan, L. Coleman, J. Ward, K. Howells, A. Gorton , D. Kay, D. Jackson, L. Gittins, D. Rowlands, SUBS = J. Muir, D. Jones , T. Farrimond, S. Tooze

MOM = Jonny Youds

Miners played well, looked one of the better sides i have seen at Saltend this year, i think both teams were a little too fast for the ref who was fair if not a little slow

Its going to be very tough for anyone coming into the club to stop the current slump in form, my heart says they will stay up but my head says relegation is looming, it wont get any better with Siddal coming to town this week

I think the club needs a bit of an overhaul and start the rebuilding process in which ever division they end up, they still have strong numbers and consistenly turn out two teams, perhaps some of the crop of players are a little green to do well but lets wait and see

At the end of the day i'll still turn up and pay me £2.50 wherever they end up!
