It's a stag-do but fairly casual (he's already flipping had one over here) for a handful of us......any suggestions for good places to stay/visit would be most welcome......cheers!

The Anne Frank house is worth a visit, you only need an hour or so for it. Couple of good museums if you like art but that might not be very "stag do" There's a sex museum thats supposed to be a laugh, though I've never been. Overall its a safe place but in the red light street if ny particular street looks a bit dodgy, turn back and go a different way, as in any city it pays to be streetwise.

If you're going to visit the red light district go at night as it is generally a safer place then than during the day.
sounds counter-intuitive.....why was that?

Because all the tourists go to check it out at night so there is the bizarre sight of people walking around looking at prostitutes with the whole family! during the day it can be quite empty apart from the undesirables that you'd associate with such a place who seem to hang around in groups. At night the place is heaving and has a much better and friendlier atmosphere.

Interesting sales pitch on this home page:

Reminds me of the realistic/anti-advertising approach that was about for a while in the late 1960s IIRC.

Go before the end of the year because after 1/1/2013 a new law comes into the city (already in the three southern provinces) that DUTCH residents ONLY will be allowed to use the coffee shops and they must have a "Weed Pass".. If you wish to have a smoke,
More big brother is watching as any smokers will then be on a data base.
I could always meet you on the corner and pass it on
