It won't be an embassy (if) they enter it.

Revoke status - walk in - arrest him - walk out - invoke status.

At no point would the police enter the embassy.
With the best, thats a good bit of PR, though I would say the Bedford team, theres, like, you know, 13 blokes who can get together at the weekend to have a game together, which doesnt point to expansion of the game. Point, yeah go on!

we can take on a small South American nation who can't/won't react, based on a dodgy premise and possibly in breach of International law, but we won't expel foreign criminals 0 and where is
Abu Hamza? I see the Met are there defending people's right to protest be arrested.

Won't a big plate of Ferrero Roche sort the issue out?
Isn't that what is dished up at the best embassies?

Which reminds me, can you still buy 10 Embassy cigs?

he might need these. http://www.i-d-s.com...ize/prod_3.html

anyway, should be a good test for the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the European Convention on Human Rights

They'd better invade Ecuador today or forget it until the last lawyer's bill has been paid.

It's an absolute can of worms if we go in there. Opens up all kinds of legal minefields plus it makes none of our embassies safe anywhere.

And all so we can get a dodgy David Gower lookalike to Sweden on a dubious charge so that the Yanks can get their hands on him. Well worth it.

Why does he need to go to Sweden for the yanks to get him? If only he had been in a country for years with a reputation for extraditing people to the USA on little evidence?

Exactly, I wouldn't have thought Sweden was as much of a lapdog as the UK. When I worked for an American IT corporation we had to consult various lists of states that showed how much discretion we had when doing business. Some states, understandably, were completely out of the question, whereas most European countries were perfectly acceptable. The Scandinavian countries, including Sweden, were on one of the intermediate lists where we had to request permission from senior levels of management.

Why are Equador inclined to give him sanctuary?
Why did he choose their embassy to go to?

Well it wasn't because of their human rights record or freedom of media.

Looks like he felt he could get a judgement in his favour.

Speaking from a position of ignorance, this seems like a very bad move from the UK government. We need to respect foreign embassies and diplomats else ours will not be respected abroad. A week ago we impressed the world, we could undo that good work.

Just grab him. Jeez. Yes he's in an Embassy but the embassy is in ENGLAND. What connection have we with Ecuador imports/exports that they can pull? What about someone doing a citizens arrest?

Would that it were that simple. There is the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and the European Convention on Human Rights

In any case, once the farces of law and order enter a foreign embassy here, they open up all our Embassies throughout the world to the same treatment.

Indeed. The idea that we can just walk in and get him is pretty laughable.

I hope it's nice in there, because I think he's in for a long stay.

Strange story all round really. If he ever does come to trial for this alleged rape, it's difficult to see how it could ever be a fair process now. However, I imagine the Swedish justice system is very well organised and more than capable of dealing with it.

The only thing I can't see is: what's in it for Ecuador?

Now, clearly annoying the UK is small beer in South America but if there is pressure from the US then surely it's quite an odd thing to grant this muppet asylum.

I also don't see why the Ecuadorians can't allow access to their sovereign territory for the Swedish police to interview our condom-phobic friend which, I believe, is all they want to do at this stage.

Perhaps we could grant some Swedish inspectors safe passage to the front door of this Kensington townhouse and just leave them ringing the bell until the Ecuadorians let them in.
Cheer up, RL is actually rather good

Not at all. Let live under selfg imposed house arrest then and not be brought to justice. Just cos it's not politically the right thing to do doesn't mean it should not be done.
