In the meantime I found this:

Rugby League has secured a new international television deal that will guarantee access to key markets including the UK, USA, Asia and the Pacific.
The five-year agreement with IMG Media will ensure fans overseas have world-wide access to all Telstra Premiership matches as well as State of Origin, Test matches played in Australia, AAMI City-Country and the Harvey Norman All Stars.
The partnership covers free-to-air television, subscription television, IPTV, mobile, in-ship, in-flight and gaming rights, as well as access to the NRL Films archive, and will provide international fans with:
• Guaranteed television coverage in key markets including the UK, USA, Asia, and Pacific;
• Access to all games in HD either through television or online platforms, as well as access to a 30-minute weekly highlights show;
• A free digital NRL Channel for international fans featuring match vision and a mobile NRL app;
• All NRL and State of Origin matches available on a live or near-live basis via television or online, mobile

Read the full article here

I'm inferring from this that IMG negotiate with media owners -TV, Internet etc - in each country to get the best deal, or any deal, for the game.

According to a comment from PS on their FB page (in an ice hockey tread) the NRL rights are still in negotiation.

Yes, that's fair to say from what I can see.

Here's the situation as of today:

Future 2013 Australian NRL Match Coverage
NOTE: It has not been confirmed yet that Premier Sports will be the rights holder in 2013

Feel for you all as I know how they muck you around over there with the NRL. Channel 9 is free to air for us,just have to put up with Rabbits and Gus,and when the NRL is on Fox Sports,just nip down to Tweed Heads Seagulls for a few schooners and watch the game(s). Yep,I know where I`d rather be!!

I emailed premier sports this week and i got a reply yesterday:

We should know in the next 2 weeks about the NRL. Given the All-Star game is
on the 9th Feb a decision by the rights holder will have to be taken sooner
rather than later.
We hope to secure the rights once more but are as in the dark as you are
currently.

Having said that selling to PSTV will surely be preferable to not selling it to anyone - Some money is better than nothing. Do we know of any other British TV company who is not only interested but is in the bidding for showing NRL in 2013?
I'd be happy for PS to keep the coverage. The number of games shown week in week out last season was excellent. My only caveat being - as long as they don't hike the price up again.
I know some watch online. My preference is to watchvia aerial or satellite dish on the big screen (not in a cabled area).

Unless they think they can make more money with the online stuff rather than TV
Medway Dragons Wheelchair RL player. Leeds Rhinos, St Albans Centurions and North Hertfordshire Crusaders fan. Also follow (to a lesser extent) Catalans Dragons, London Broncos, South Sydney Rabbitohs, Jacksonville Axemen, Vrchlabi Mad Squirrels, København Black Swans and Featherstone Rovers

is premier sports worth £9.99 a month for just one championship game a week? i don't think it is. IMO they need to get the nrl games to justify rl fans subscribing.

It depends on the individual but for me I haven't put it on once since the season finished. So if they don't get the NRL I'll be cancelling.
