Hunslet Warriors 36- 20 Oldham St Annes

Hats off to St. Annes for a massive performance against the Division 1 leaders, and this was without doubt our best performance of the season. Warriors thought they were in for a stroll around the park in the sunshine, but our lads had other ideas and matched them every step of the way. Apart from a 10 minute spell in the first half when Warriors were well on top, Saints showed just what they are capable of on a good day. Well done lads

Leigh Miners 34 v 24 Thatto Heath

Leigh Miners stay fifth in the NCL after a scrappy 34-24 victory against local rivals Thatto Heath on a warm afternoon at Twist Lane. Both teams were far from their best and the opening stages felt like it was scrum after scrum with both sides unable to keep hold of the ball and build any pressure. Miners opened the scoring when Ryan Ravenscroft intercepted a Thatto pass to run a good forty yards to score, Jonny Youds converting to give the score 6-0. From the try Miners looked the more likely to score but that changed when Miners fumbled inside their own half from a simple Thatto kick, Thatto took full advantage scoring from the next set bringing the score to 6-4. The visitors were in front soon after when Lee Gittins threw a wild pass inside his own ten which was intercepted by the Thatto half back, who strolled in under the sticks to bring the score to 10-6 in favour of Thatto. Miners hit back with a try from Lee Gittins out on the left, Youds converting to nudge Miners back in front at 12-10. Just before the break Miners scored a third try, Danny Jones making a break to get on the front foot and from the next play Miners broke down the left with Adam Thomason finishing off, Youds converting to open up an eight point gap going into the half time break.

Thatto started the brighter of the two teams in the second half, scoring a good try early on in the left corner to get back within four points with the score at 18-14. Liam Coleman scored a fourth home try under the sticks but again Thatto responded with a try themselves, this time from a cross field kick. With both teams having scored four tries apiece Miners had a six point lead at 24-18 due to Thatto only managing to land one conversion while Youds had landed all four for Miners. Youds stretched the gap to eight points on the hour mark with a penalty goal. The visitors scored their fifth try soon after to make it a two point ball game at 26-24 to set up a tense end to the game. With both teams needing the two points to boost their playoff chances it was the home side that finished the stronger scoring two tries to wrap up the two points, the first from Adam Thomason out on the right who went in for his second of the game, followed by Darryl Kay in the final few minutes to give Miners a 34-24 victory.

MINERS TEAM = J. Youds, S. Pendlebury, L. Gittins, S. Marsh , R. Ravenscroft, L. Coleman, J. Ward, K. Howells, A. Gorton , D. Kay, A. Thomason, D. Jackson, D. Rowlands, SUBS = J. Muir, D. Jones , T. Farrimond, M. Lewis

Not sure what's wrong with thatto this year, they seemed like world beaters last year and cant seem to string a few wins together this season!!! Have they lost players, or just not playing as well as they can?? Leigh east are also very similar this year! I have watched both teams and don't seem a patch on last season...!!
