Just received this e-mail from the RFL regarding the reinstatement of the GB Lions RL team.

Thank you for your email.

There are currently no plans to bring the Great Britain concept back currently but that's not to say the team will not be resurrected in the future.

Regards
The RFL

Thats me done then. Not spending anymore of my hard earned money watching an England RL team full of Australians and New Zealanders until the GB Lions are brought back.

You were willing to watch a team of Englishmen pretending to be GB though.

And who's to say that Rangi Chase wouldn't have been picked for GB.

Erm, isn't England a constituent country of the Kingdom of Great Britain? I think you'll also find that it occupies a significant portion of the island of Great Britain, by definition, an Englishman is also British.

Hasn't there been plenty of Welshmen and the odd Scot playing for GB too in the not too distant past?

The four nations are fine for internal competitions, however on the world stage, we should go with the full legal country.

Incidentally, I have never got the concept of the home nations teams in football or RU either. We're either one biggish country, or a few tiny ones

You've mixed two completely different issues. The Chase situation has nothing to do with England/GB. Have you asked any Scots, Welsh or Irish RL people what they want, or doesn't that matter in your world view?

I think you'll find it does, formed from the union of Scotland and England. It is separate from the kingdom of Ireland, hence the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (GB&I until 1922).

The Kingdom is Great Britain & Northern Ireland.

The only welshman who'd get in the gb side would be briers and that's it. So the rest of the squad would be mainly english so don't get what the difference is. All you'd be doing is denying 16 welsh players the chance of playing rep rl.

Why stop there? Lets call it Europe, after all we are part of it.
How many non English players are currently at the top and would be selected for a GB side? I'd guess none at this point.

The email (assuming it was real) did say it maybe revived in future. Ie if there are Welsh or Scottish (not heritage) players to select. Not that it was gone forever.

And before someone says it, yes GB was a very popular brand at the Olympics. But this is because the athletes/competitors weren't just English but from the British Isles. Not just one pocket of England.

How can Irish players sensibly represent GB ?
None played their RL in Wales, Scotland or Ireland whilst representing GB&I. You would be hard pressed to find many who learnt their RL outside england let alone as thier first sport. Australians, Kiwis and and even those from the Pacific Islands have represented England so you are only talking about a name; GB&I = England.

How many now? And likely to be in the next few years? You would gave been perfectly happy with 13 English lads pretending they had Scots etc amongst them but are not happy that we admit the reality of the situation for now.

Are you saying that we havn't enough English players to fill 17 places in an England team then.
