Apparently, under the current civil service protocol, only one knighthood and damehood can be allowed for sporting achievement.

The Telegraph article advocates Bradley Wiggins and Jessica Ennis for the awards.

Personally, I don't think Jessica Ennis should get one as she is only young and hasn't achieved any more than Denise Lewis. It could solve a problem if they gave it to Denise.

My choice would be Bradley Wiggins and Dave Brailsford. My money would be on Bradley Wiggins and Ben Ainslie.

The article considers whether more awards should be made, but where could the system draw the line? For instance, the super heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua was guilty of having cannabis with intent to supply in 2011. How he was even eligible to compete in the Olympics surprises me.

Is Olympic success sufficient in itself to be rewarded by a knighthood or damehood? Are these people just doing their job?
Assuming that they'd accept an award, who, if anyone, would you nominate.

In a way, it's a nice problem to have, isn't it? GB now has so many Gold medal Olympians that further honours have to be rationed!

I would expect myself to decline any Honour, not that one would ever be offered,
Interesting to see a list of those who have done so.

The classy thing is not to mention that you've declined an Honour.

In that case, I wouldn't like to say whether or not I've declined one.

Indeed.Interesting to look at that list - I couldn't see any sportspeople (not that I went through it 100% diligently) who had declined.

Just pointing out a minor fact - an ASBO isn't strictly an honour. ;)

I'd give it to all the front line medics, they run, jump and dodge rounds to save the lives of others.

In the third paragraph it mentions Keith Hill declining a knighthood. Although guiding Rochdale AFC to their first promotion in 40 years is by any standard more than enough to earn the right to put 'Sir' before one's name, he probably wanted to achieve just a little more before accepting the honour.

Mick Jagger accepted a knighthood.

Keef turned his down. Good lad.

Ah, but MBEs are like confetti - they give 'em out willy nilly.

Knighthoods and damehoods are a bit different - they have to go to prominent supporters of political parties and civil servants first and foremost. It's the time honoured British way, whether you've given the party in power a big cheque or worked behind the scenes covering up government mess.
