I watched the interview last night between Sam Newman and the AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou on Channel Nines AFL Footy Show.....All I got from it was how paranoid they were of Rugby League......Deep Down they know Rugby League is a far better code of football. I follow both games and Rugby League is a far better game out of the two. When it comes to State Of Origin, the AFL has nothing to match it.

I don't follow AFL at all,but unfortunately for us that code - Has teams in every state - Gets more money thrown at it at grass roots level - Draws bigger crowds consistently - Has a far more proffesional group running it.

State of Origin is a big plus for RL but still hamstrung by the NSW / QLD mindset when it comes to promoting it.

Sam was quite a let down in that interview I thought, totally outfoxed by the greasy politician that is Andy D.

Give the ARL a couple of years mate, most of that will be cancelled out.

As you said the main advantage they have atm is teams in Perth and Adelaide. But if the ARL expands there in the next 5-10 years it'll negate any serious advantage that the AFL could claim wrt corporate sponsors.

Long term the comp is in a good position. The NRL's stranglehold over Sydney (the biggest city in the country) and a stranglehold over what will soon be the two biggest states in the country bodes well.

Compare that to the AFL which will have 10 teams in the country's third biggest state, no team in the national capital or other large regional centres like Newcastle, North QLD or Wollongong and no team in NZ.
Remember that they're spending over a quarter of their deal on running teams like the Swans, Lions, Suns, Giants, Power, etc. The ARL doesn't have to worry about this and has the money to spend elsewhere...

We're on the cusp of a golden era and the recent selling of the tv rights for over a billion dollars was merely the beginning.
