Leigh Miners reached their first final in four years on Saturday afternoon, beating Division One title challengers Bradford Dudley Hill 19-6 in the semi-final of the Conference Challenge Cup on a sunny afternoon at The Neil Hunt Memorial Ground, Miners now take on Cumbrian outfit Egremont Rangers in the final at Warrington Wolves Halliwell Jones Stadium on Sunday 30th September after Rangers had an excellent 26-10 victory against Wigan St Pats on Saturday.
Dudley Hill come out strong in the opening stages playing with the wind and had the better of the field position making Miners work hard to get out of their own half and after a spell of pressure attacking the Miners line the home side opened the scoring out on the left, the try being converted to give Dudley Hill a 6-0 lead. Miners ground themselves back into the game with a high completion rate, knocking off sets and building pressure forcing Dudley Hill into mistakes to get good field position. John Woods scored Miners first try beating his opposite winger in a foot race to score in the corner after a nice grubber kick behind the defence to bring the score to 6-4. Miners took the lead a few minutes later scoring again out wide on the right, Centre Martin Lewis going over to give Miners a two point lead at 8-6. Ross Bradley scored a third try before the break, after Miners opted to run at Dudley Hill on a last tackle play, Bradley chipping over the full back after breaking down the left to score in the corner to give Miners a 12-6 half time lead after a tough opening forty minutes.
The start of the second half was scrappy from both teams with neither team able to complete their sets or get to a kick, when the teams settled It was Miners who were the more effective and after some good attacking play Martin Lewis went over for his second try to give the score 16-6, Soon after Scott O’Brien slotted over a drop goal to increase the lead to eleven points at 17-6. With the home side needing two converted tries to retake the lead they threw everything they could at the Miners line in the final quarter, a few times going close to scoring only to be denied by a determined Miners defence. In the final few minutes Miners finished the stronger forcing Dudley Hill to play from deep inside their half and building pressure with the ball in hand on the Dudley Hill line, Jonny Youds landed his first conversion of the day late on after the home side kicked the ball out on the full from a drop out, Youds landing the simple penalty goal from under the sticks to give Miners a 19-6 victory.
Next week Miners are away to top of the table West Hull.
