Members of Parliament have endorsed the new rugby league Charity Rugby League Cares, which brings together the elements of the RFL philanthropic activities.

The charity, details of which can be found at www.rugbyleaguecares.org, brings together the Rugby League Foundation, the RFL Benevolent Fund and, the RFL Heritage Trust to celebrate and protect rugby league's heritage and traditions; help those in need within the rugby league family and work to help the sport’s future by securing funding and support projects at the grassroots of the game.

The motion, tabled by Parliamentary Rugby League Group Chairman Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland states:

"That this House congratulates the Rugby Football League on the creation of the formidable charitable body Rugby League Cares which brings together its various charitable and altruistic activities; shares the aims of Rugby League Cares to affect positively the lives of people of all ages through the power and positive influence of sport through its connections to a family of charities linked to professional rugby league clubs through the UK and Europe; welcomes the support of its partners Sport Relief, NHS Choices, NHS services the Mental Health Network and Leeds Metropolitan University's Institute for Health and Wellbeing; thanks all Super League clubs for their continued support and promotion of challenging mental health issues."

On tabling the Motion, Mulholland said “Rugby League Cares is both welcomed and innovative. As a game rooted in community, rugby league has a long and proud tradition of supporting charitable work, and in bringing together the different elements of the RFL’s charitable work, resources can be shared and a single brand e put forward so the message gets across more succinctly.

“Well done to all those involved, and on behalf of the Parliamentary Rugby League Group, I look forward to hearing much more about the charity’s work.”

Rugby League Cares Chairman Terry Flannigan thanked MPs for their support, saying “We all know that rugby league has a strong link with Parliamentarians. We share a common theme of supporting communities and those who most need our support. We were delighted to hear of the Motion supporting our creation and we will be sure to consider how best we can work together to deliver our commons goals.”

It is a fantastic idea and one I fully support. I put it in our 'Spotlight on Super League' article, which can be found by clicking on the link in my signature. They also re-tweeted me for mentioning them too.

There's a 4 page feature on 'Rugby League Cares' in the new issue of Rugby League World. Includes interviews with Stephen Ball, Matt King, Pete Stephenson and John Burke.
