Its better to keep quiet and let people think you a fool rather than open your mouth and prove them right!

What is so bad about it!
Then wisdom says: cherish your days, worry only lets your time slip away
Push away the thief trying to steal your gift, the fighter is the one whose feet are swift.

Where's Paley when you need him?
And when they found our shadows
Grouped around the TV sets
They ran down every lead
They repeated every test
They checked out all the data on their lists
And then the alien anthropologists
Admitted they were still perplexed
But on eliminating every other reason
For our sad demise
They logged the only explanation left
This species has amused itself to death
No tears to cry no feelings left
This species has amused itself to death

What an odd OP.

I'm surprised half of the usual posters on this board haven't spontaneously combusted with having a topic that involves a Catholic Premiership footballer and a link to a Daily Mail mail article.

Why?

If that's what Rooney believes its his choice
The mail has a decent crossword, not all of its output is little englander small mindedness.

Rooney certainly has every right to practise his religion, but I'd question the extent to which it is a choice. The vast majority of religious people are religious because of the unquestionable 'truths' they have drilled into them in childhood. A minority start to challenge what they've been instructed to believe only when they reach an age when they can reason and question these things for themselves. There are no people or processes offering children the chance to consider a religion-free life, unless they are parents who are themselves non religious.

Rooney has no great reputation as a thinker, and my guess is that he simply continues to accept without question the beliefs indoctrinated into him as a small child.

That applies to all of us. However smart we think we are.

Rooney proclaims his religious belief for all the world to see. That is his right. I proclaim on here my belief that he is wrong. That too is my right.

However, it goes beyond a mere personal belief. Rooney is a role model to many young people. We may not like that, but its there. Imagine say , another Rooney proclaiming his athesism for the wrld to see.

BTW, where is Paley?

There are those who are considered great thinkers who are deeply religious.
I think you have a good point about Rooney exploiting his fame to spout about his religion and the willingness of the mail to publish it.
However I can't see there being an upsurge in the number of altar boys being a result of it.

If he was exploiting his fame then it is odd that we've only just heard of this and he's been famous for about a decade.

He's hardly shouting it from the rooftops. He could make a much bigger deal of it if he wanted.

well the Mail is a major media outlet.

I don't think many people will have a damascene conversion after reading the piece though.

I wonder whether the Mail will be allowing other famous people to espouse their beliefs on tjeir pages.
