Thats why haven have a signed pre contract agreement with him for a 2 year deal, so yeah he was never going to sign for us was he!!!!.. Think this has the potential to be very messy but if the clubs are sensible then i have no doubt he will end up being a town player next season, as if he has changed his mind with haven then what use it is it trying to force him to stay. But a three year deal is a massive commitment for some one coming back from a bad injury. To be honest i'm suprised he even thought about coming back to haven.
This will only get "messy" if that is what Haven intend. The problem is with Haven not Town. It doesn't matter how many pre-contract agreements he signed unless those agreements are registered with the RFL within 48 hours and also that the club offering the pre-contract agreement have notified in writing the players contracted club (contracts expire on 30th November each year). As far as I am aware Haven didn't register their pre-contract agreement and with Matty being a Town contracted player until the end of November there is absolutely nothing to stop them offering new contract details to their player.
One thing I do agree with you on though is that I also was surprised that he even thought of going back to Haven after the way they treat him!!!!!!! Once again though I suspect that this has been brought about by Mr Cox not knowing the full details or how the system works before spreading it on Radio Cumbria.
I remember when .............................
"It is impossible not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Workington Town, the fall guys this season for the Super League's determination to retain it's European dimesion, in the shape of Paris. While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave hadfield - Independent 25th Augsut 1996.

The problem is the club won't be able to announce it until after the mess with haven is sorted out. It will be announced officially soon enough. As for it getting messy, it might for haven if they've been speaking to him without towns permission, town have certainly done nothing wrong.

Mmmm interesting star report today ... Haven say he signed on Sep 1 but the RFL clearly say its illegal to speak to a contracted player until Sep 1 , and he didn't just turn up out of nowhere and sign that day did he .... Illegal approach ?? Reading between the lines as we say .

town haven done nothing wrong, neither have haven the player approached them .If he has now had a change of heart then the blame for this is with one person.Keith how do you know haven failed to register it .I could be wrong but everything im hearing says they did .Also you say the way we treated him,as our relegation season was coming to an end he was one of the few players still being paid on a regular basis at times by one of the directors stumping it up .As for persmission to talk to players well haven certainly didnt give town perrmission to talk too jamie rooney .It goes on all the time at all clubs in every league. But like i said cant see how trying o make him hounor it is of any use to anyone

He wants to play for town , it would be pure bitterness and sour grapes to drag it out .

If he has signed this pre contract agreement, and a full contract with town, who's player will he be. It's all getting s little confusing. Will town maybe have to pay some sort of settlement? Did haven break any rules? And why the sudden change of heart?

but he was happy to sign a player registeration for haven which the rfl have, so does he want to play for town id say based on this money is the overiding factor rather than loyalty to any club

Deary me . I think the moral here is be very very certain of your mind before you sign anything or you end up in a pickle .

Maybe he just decided it was the right thing and he knew that even if it was less money he was guaranteed to get paid it????

Yeah david but what it boils down to is they are gutted he will be staying at town. Some are openly admitting it but most wont. If its not this contract lark its he wont be the same player after his shoulder injury or we have players just as good lol. Like i say its all down to bitter disapointment and i understand that, as matty is a class player of championship standard. We'd have been gutted if he had left us too.

Workington hooker Graeme Mattinson’s future is up in the air after the Rugby Football League admitted they’ve received two registration forms for him – one from Town and one from Whitehaven.

Graeme Mattinson
It has been no secret within the rugby league rumour mill that Mattinson’s former club Haven would dearly like to re-sign the highly-rated star.
And News & Star Sport understands that Mattinson signed a contract for 2013 with Whitehaven, on September 1. But he then decided against rejoining the Recre outfit and signed a new deal with Workington at the beginning of this week.
Town chairman Dave Bowden released a statement on behalf of Workington Town which said: “Graeme Mattinson is a Workington Town player and has re-signed for us in line with RFL regulations.” He refused to comment further.
And a Whitehaven spokesman said that Graeme Mattinson signed for Haven on September 1 for next season.
They declined to make any further comment.
A representative of the RFL told News & Star Sport: “Clubs can approach players who are coming out of contract and players can talk to clubs as from September 1. Any contact prior to that would be regarded as an illegal approach.
“The RFL’s registration manager Chris Thair will be speaking to all parties involved.”

If true then this shows Haven have quite obviously spoken to him before September 1st, or did the deal get done in 12 hours.
