I see the gate was only 563 yesterday and this must be so disappointing.compared with 1710 for the Barrow game and 1954 for the Haven game. Why was this so low and in fact one of the lowest of the season at DP. Surely the people of Workington can give better support to their town team.

He's right though , it's poor and we need the crowds every week and not cherry picking.

Yes it was poor and the boys deserve much better. Hopefully we can get well over 1500 next week then a big away following to barrow/donny. The away following yesterday was very low though, about 50 max.

In both those big derbys your talking at least 1200 town fans . So they're out there.

If we could get crowds like that every week what a team we'd have. It was only Oldham after all hopefully the likes of Halifax and featherstone may bring a few down

About the only good thing that came from the DJ regime for us was the increase in supporter base. We now average about 1400 at CP but in 2005 it was less than 1000. For the sake of Cumbria (I'm a Lancastrian really) I hope that you and Haven can really put some numbers on. My main fear is that for all 3 of us life in the Championship will not be easy and only us die hard supporters can be relied upon to keep the turnstiles ticking.

thats if you win.To be honset this is one of the big advantages of being in the championship not only better away following at games but more attractive games for the floating fans, the floaters who come out for the derbies are more likely to come again when the likes of fax or leigh are in town, than if oldham or rochdale are

Sorry i have to disagree with haven being slight favourites. Why make them favs? They had players who limped off yesterday too according to RC. I hear people saying their tails are up. So what? Yesterday was perfect preperation for us. Another performance like yesterday minus the errors and sloppy passing and i think we will win.

I don't know what game you were watching yesterday but sorry, perfect preparation it certainly wasn't; we were within a gnats whisker of being out, it came down to a single mistake from their full back, a lucky bounce and Mossop's persistence. We got out of jail, not only do we need to cut out the errors etc ( How many times do we hear that ?) but to play with a bit more structure and togetherness. We are likely going to have a different half-back combo again next week, hopefully the one that served us so well against Rochdale but who knows. Anyhow, favourites or not matters very little as far as I'm concerned. Can we win it, course we can, can we lose it, if we play like yesterday I'd say its not out of the question.

I wasn't at the game yesterday so can't comment about the game but what does concern me apart from the crowd is that our defence seems to not be nearly as strong as it was earlier in the season. We keep knocking points up but we keep making it much harder through weak defence. We certainly need to iighten up in that department!!!
I remember when .............................

"It is impossible not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Workington Town, the fall guys this season for the Super League's determination to retain it's European dimesion, in the shape of Paris. While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave hadfield - Independent 25th Augsut 1996.

That's right Keith . Im not that confident anymore when we're defending our line . Some of the tries yesterday , as of recent weeks , were soft , through gaps and on early tackles. Oldham scored twice in the second half despite having few chances.. We're masking it by scoring points but in big games , and away from home , it is a worry . Some said yesterday that a long season is taking its toll but it looks more like we are just struggling for top form and for cohesion with all the team changes in personnel and positionally .Things are looking more of an effort lately. Oneday is right about errors , they're peppering our game which frustrates Charlo as he knows what were capable of , but it is an ongoing problem. We score points which is a big plus , but we do need a final lift across the whole if we are to become champions .We have the players I'm convinced of it but errors and defensive frailties against Barra , Donny or maybe even Haven will kill ya.

They say that defence wins matches. Reading this forum implies that town can't defend. I kow we can't ( both my teams Barrow and Coventry Bears). It sems that we all depend on our attacks making up for our defensive weakness.
So what do we want
? Sterile defencies negating everything that attacks throw at us---
-or,occasionally getting caught out but the flair of our attack ripping into their defence?
Charlo and Holty want the defences to prevail but we the humble speccies want our defences to hold 'em out but our attacks to tear them apart as that makes for exiting rugby.

Oneday, it was perfect preperation I.M.O because we were playing an oldham team up for it and made us work hard for the win and after the gateshead fiasco this result along with the hornets result will have put some desire and heart back into the team. They now know what they have to work on in training (sloppy passes and errors) along with players out of position need to improve a little. Good preperation for a derby in my eyes.

Take your point and we do tend to follow up a bad performance with a good one so timing could be good. As you say a bit to work on in training. A few errors are inevitable but what is it with the passing all of a sudden and please please don't surrender possession on your first play. I don't think you can question the heart and desire of this team; its always been there, we just need a bit more patience and consistency sometimes ?
