Well done Barry.I remember when you used to write the Hunslet feature in the old style Rugby Leaguer .
And I can remember listening your match reports on the Radio Leeds RL program on Sunday evening down a crackly phone line from dim and distant places like Huyton and Workington, long before I was allowed to undertake such journeys myself (or find someone to take me) ...

I went for David Ward as the best coach because of one word- PROFESSIONALISM.
Blackpool - if you want to know all about Hunslets past records the person to contact is GABBY-- he once showed me a journal which had every Hunslet team listed from year dot--, now that would be a job to give to Pat B for the website.
I know GABBY comes on this Forum so maybe he will respond.

yes I did write the club column in the Rugby Leaguer, and did match reports on Radio Leeds--- I remember one game at Huyton being half way through the match report using the telephone in their office when the police came in and took it out of my hand, saying they had to call for reinforcements as some kids were throwing bricks at the club coach ( the bus not Paul Daley).

Think this is everything major:
RUGBY LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP
Winners: 1907-08, 1937-38
Runners-Up: 1905-06, 1958-59
CHALLENGE CUP
Winners: 1907-08, 1933-34
Runners-Up: 1898-99, 1964-65
YORKSHIRE CUP
Winners: 1891-92 (Rugby Union version), 1905-06, 1907-08, 1962-63
Runners-Up: 1908-09, 1929-30, 1931-32, 1944-45 (War version), 1956-57, 1965-66
YORKSHIRE LEAGUE
Winners: 1897-98, 1907-08, 1931-32
Runners-Up: 1910-11, 1937-38, 1958-59
CHALLENGE PLATE
Runners-Up: 1997
DIVISION TWO CHAMPIONSHIP
Winners: 1962-63, 1986-87, 1997
Runners-Up: 1978-79
PREMIERSHIP
Winners: 1999
CHAMPIONSHIP ONE
Winners: 2010
The difficulty with the last ones is that the Rugby League have messed about with the formats so much it's not easy to see what we actually won. The D2 Championships of 63, 87 and the Premiership of 99 are basically the same (and the equivalent of winning the Championship now!

Some great names cropping up here! I remember Keith mason, very similar to Coyley, would take the ball in all day long and get through loads of tackles but didn't really ever break any! Do I remember rightly that Keith had never scored a try but I seem to remember a game where we won convincingly and someone making a break and literally waiting for Keith at the try line to wabble along and score a try!

Graeme Jennings had a kind of curly Australian mullet as well

I can do those as well ... but I'm just about to break up for a few days' holiday and am unlikely to be on here again in that time.
If nobody else has supplied them by the time I get back next Thursday, I'll post them then.

Just to advise that winning the Yorkshire League in 1897/8 was not like the other occasions. There were too many clubs clamouring to join the new progessional game so the leagues were split into Yorkshire and Lancashire leagues. We didn't play any Lancs. sides that year apart from cup ties and Lancs clubs did'nt play any Yorks sides. In the other two seasons, champions were decided by fixtures against your own county clubs WITHIN a full league system. So theoretically we were top of the league in 1897/8, just as 1937/8.

There must be old copies of the programme in the office or maybe someone reading this can telephone the club with the info you want
and will someone tell me how to get rid of the underlining._
