TAKEN FROM CODE 13 WEBSITE IN OCTOBER 2011.
The RFL has today announced bold plans to fast-track four clubs into the semi-professional level of the game.
The RFL’s chief operating officer Ralph Rimmer today outlined the plans at a media briefing in Brighouse, West Yorkshire, which will see four clubs enter the Co-operative Championship One competition from 2013 with the four clubs likely to be from outside the game’s heartland.
Sixteen clubs have expressed an interest in the four places including Hemel Stags and Coventry Bears who play in the Rugby League National Conference, the league below Championship One.
Rimmer said, “Having harvested areas in the heartland, we need to grow the market to add value to our competition. We need to re-invent ourselves to some extent and change the rugby league landscape in this country. That is how big the plans are.”
The four new clubs will be selected and announced one at a time over the next four months, and each will be given support from the RFL before joining a the 10-club Championship One in 2013.
Rimmer also announced that in the coming 2012 season there will be no relegation from the Championship but four clubs will be promoted from Championship One to make way for the newcomers, thus making a 14-club Championship.
Promotion and relegation will then return between the two Championships from 2013.
Clubs in the Championship however will have to meet minimum standards, such as a 3,000 stadium capacity, with Rimmer describing the changes as a “leap of faith”, accepting there may be an initial lowering of quality on the pitch in the largely expansion based Championship One.

Coventry Bears are entering the Championship 1 next season. They have a ladies team and have already taken an interest in marketing their club to fans through merchandise so are in a position where they are already looking to the future and to get a foothold in a semi pro league. I wish them luck and hoe they can progress and build a club, Sheffield have done it albeit with the Shuddersfield fiaso in the middle of it but on small crowds they are now a top team in the championship.
Promotion and relegation is a must and both the teams coming up and those at the bottom of the Championship have something to think about next season

I'm the Chairman and I didn't know that we are in C1 next year!
We have applied however, but we're still waiting for a decision.
Thanks for your good wishes though.
