[Methven Hornet]

For anyone interested the Camanachd Cup Final at Oban Mossfield, between Kyles Athletic (Tighnabruaich, Argyle) and Inveraray (Argyle) has just started on BBC 2 Scotland (Sky 970).

There'll be plenty of action (and plenty of drinking, probably - a quick crowd shot showed a youth clutching a bottle of Buckfast!).

Shinty! Originating in the Gaelic areas of Scotland, it is quite similar to the game of hurling in Ireland (both nations play internationals with a hybrid format). Think of hockey played at head-height!
I believe a tradition is to take a dram before the game - looking at some of the blows to the players' fingers I think it must be for numbing reasons.

Barely a quarter of the game gone and the scoring has been:-

And after trailing for most of the match, Kyles win 6 - 5. It has been an incredible final!

I only just found out about it at lunchtime. I don't know if it will be on i-player or the red button, but it is well worth watching if you can, almost non-stop action and some tremendous goals.

To me, shinty is everything hockey should be, or what it would have been had it emerged from a less genteel background, ie had a few sticks, a ball and a couple of goals been given to a group of miners, dockers or agricultural workers, then something akin to shinty would have emerged.

When we lived in Carlisle our BBC Scotland signal was better than BBC North(west) so we watched a fair bit of shinty then. Loved it.
