I've noticed that the singing section have added the famous West Ham United song 'Forever Blowing Bubbles' to their repertoire in recent years.

A lot of clubs in football like Liverpool (You'll never walk alone), Everton (Z-Cars), Leeds (Marching on together) and Huddersfield (Smile a while) have their own 'songs' - either original pieces or popular songs that have become synonymous with a club.

It's spilled over into rugby league too. 'Just can't get enough' plays after Wigan matches, the Rhinos have adopted marching on together and then we also have the famous Hull FC and Hull KR songs.

It got me thinking... what is the closest thing we have to an official club song?

Is there an old original club piece that we could get a local band to cover?

Is there a popular song that's traditionally associated with Dewsbury RLFC?

I think it'd be great if we had something to play at matches - before or after - and, If we stuck with it, then over time it'd feel like a part of the club and could really help out with brand identity and awareness.

This isn't a 'what should the club come out of the tunnel to' thread. It shouldn't just be something that gets people 'pumped up'.

Thoughts...?

God - when i saw that headline i thought we'd signed michael jackson.
Think we've had this discussion about a theme song before - seem to remember my mate - a closet dogs fan, suggesting duelling banjo's. I can't honestly think of a song associated with Dewsbury, either the town or the club, and the only musical association I can think of at all is that the bandmaster who went down with the titanic lived here - which hopefully wont be too apt this season.
if we'd hung onto faal and flannagan, jailhouse rock would have been a good one, but 'Boys are back in town' by lizzie always does it for me. :)

I love 'The boys are back in town' but I think with it being a rock song it won't be to everyone's tastes, and it's also already played at a lot of sporting events.

Everton chose the Z-Cars theme as the programme was pretty popular at a time when the team was sweeping all before them on the field. It was also one of the first BBC programmes shot in Merseyside (I think).

So what was about in 1973? Maybe that'd be a good starting point.

This is a really good opportunity to create a new bit of history!

Biggest song in 1973 was Tie a yellow ribbon round the ole old tree by Tony Ordando and Dawn,we could change the words to red, amber and black ribbon round the ole old tree.Think this song was still number one when we won our championship against Leeds. My fav is This is our house by Bon Jovi. That should get the lads ready for action when coming out of the tunnel.

I think something like 'This is our house' could remain as part of the pre-match build-up. It works and I understand that it was chosen by the lads themselves.

'Tie a yellow ribbon' sounds like a great suggestion though. Something that could be played, say, 15 minutes before kick-off, as the players head into the changing rooms after their warm-ups, or immediately after the final hooter.

There's also 'she wore a yellow ribbon', which is sung by Rams fans at the moment (She wore an amber ribbon, she wore it for her lover and he played for Dewsbury), and is one I've always liked.

I'm sure we could find a local band to cover either song, with specially adapted lyrics. If you look at the lyrics for 'yellow ribbon' they wouldn't be that difficult to tweak.

What does everyone else think?

Some gooduns in 1973 - smoke on the water and that great old stomper nutbush city limits and ermmm duelin banjos again - and ironically living in the past - maybe we need to think of something a bit more up to date. ;)

The important thing is that whatever is chosen relfects the club's heritage and identity.

And, as mentioned, it should also be something that will have a universal appeal - which rules out most of the stuff in the charts at the moment!

We shouldn't fall into the trap of picking a 'trendy' song. The most iconic sporting anthems aren't trendy.

The Champions League theme is classical music, but is embraced by everyone.

I'm aware of that, but it was as the Z-Cars theme that it came to be known as the Everton 'song'. Members of the programme's cast visited Goodison Park for a match, they played the theme in their honour, and it stuck.

I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts often seems apt.

Only about 15 people in the South Stand actually sing (broad interpretation of meaning) and I can't imagine that number would increase anytime soon with a different theme tune.

Or am I just being curmudgeonly?

It's not so much to get the fans singing - although I do think our singers would make a lot more noise if they stood at the back of the stand - it's more about building the identity of the club and tapping into its heritage a little bit to do it.

We are not a fly-by-night club, we have an illustrious history in the sport, and supporters coming to games for the first time should get that impression when they walk through the turnstiles. We want them to feel a part of something special. Like the Liverpool fans do when they hear 'You'll never walk alone'.

So much of Hull FC's marketing is based around their 'Old Faithful' song, and I think we're missing a trick by not having something of our own.

SHE WORE, SHE WORE, SHE WORE THE AMBER RIBBON
SHE WORE IT FOR HER LOVER AND HE PLAYED FOR DEWSBURY
AND IF YOU ASK, WHY SHE WORE HER RIBBON
SHE WORE IT FOR HER LOVER AND HE PLAYED FOR DEWSBURY

DEWSBURY.. DEWSBURY

... Where does this originate from because its been sung for years now and i honestly dont know?

Iv already spoke to Tom today about this thread, and about getting my mates band to create a club anthem and if the fans and the club agree to it im sure my mates band would be more than willing to give it ago to the words of us fans? These words i reckon we should most definatly include as theyve been sung for years at our games now...

Why don't we have she wore an amber ribbon as our theme song? Personally I love singing that song
"Are you tryin' to mug me off in front of my pals?"

I work with a Featherstone fan so I could suggest "I don't like Mondays"! (Boomtown Rats)

Something on the lines of "Teenage Rampage" could be lyrically possible but the camp overtones of glam rock band Sweet may not be quite the image we're after.

"I surrender" by Rainbow is just not right either!

Perhaps this little verse I have penned sung to the folk tune "Over the hills and far away" (the one featured in the Sharpe films featuring gritty Northern Actor Sean Bean)(Don't mention Sheffield)

Oh Dewsb'ry is the team we choose

Cast down the shirts of other hues,

Red amber and black will have their day

Over the Hills and far away.

Over the Hills and O'er the land,

To Yorkshire, Lancs and Cumberland,

King Glenn commands and we'll obey

Over the Hills and far away

Slight edit: Thinking about this far too much!

Oh Dewsb'ry is the team we choose

Cast down the shirts of other hues,

Red amber and black will win the day

Over the Hills and far away.

Over the Hills and O'er the land,

To Yorkshire, Lancs and Cumberland,

King Glenn commands and we'll obey

Over the Hills and far away

I'll not give up the day job!

Went to Boston Red Sox baseball game and the fans all sang Sweet Caroline during the game and it was a big part of the evenings entertainment, so see what Tom means. Good job cos baseball is dull as ditchwater.
