Comets look set to shut down. Could have ramifications for us in terms of money available for next year unless somebody else takes them over.....

I think it would have had more effect if it happened last year, but as were now in the bigger league with better teams I would think that our crowds will cover us.at least we won't have any more pitches like that on Sunday as that was shocking, and down to the speedway track.

Got told 2 months back speedway will be finishing next year as for crowds it,ll be the same for town and haven unless both teams start well the crowds wont be much better than this year most of the champ teams have a poor away support

The crowds have really dropped - Walshy was saying tonight that Denham wants out straight away as he is financing a 3 grand a week loss as crowds are down to 500 for the last home meet.
If Town can pick up some of those fans (if Comets do close) who have chosen Speedway over Rugby and can't afford both, then the money that Town lose from the Speedway could be replaced if they come back to the rugby.

I hope the song pack in, I don't like to see any local team struggling. Isnt speed way still priced at £17?

Denham is shouting now that he is making a loss on 500 crowds but how much profit was he making when crowds were 1500+ then. He was pleading poverty then to get the rent reduced. The Comets need a new owner who wil work with their landlords (Town) for the benefit of both sets of supporters.
I remember when .............................

"It is impossible not to feel a twinge of sympathy for Workington Town, the fall guys this season for the Super League's determination to retain it's European dimesion, in the shape of Paris. While the French have had every assistance to survive, the importance of having a flagship in a heartland area like West Cumbria has been conveniently forgotten." - Dave hadfield - Independent 25th Augsut 1996.

Dead right KT.
1000 extra supporters a meet at £10 each = £10,000 more revenue and most of it profit as most other costs would be fixed.

Denham is like a broken record...... he comes out with the same pleading poverty every year to get his rent reduced. If he reduced the gate price it might tempt more to go and watch, but at his current price people can't afford it in the current economic climate.

If Comets get 1000 watching this Saturday night Denham has said in the paper he will give each spectator £5 refund from £15 admission fee!!
Personally, I'm not interested in Speedway but hate seeing any local team in financial trouble. Looking from the outside, it seems crowds are falling as Mr Denham doesn't seem as well liked or personable as Ian Thomas. Hopefully they'll survive and Town and speedway can work together a bit better.

Why have they never made it to the big league? Used to bigger crowds than some top teams.

I was there last week, I know what 500 at DP looks like, there looked to be almost twice that to me, didn't count them though. Are negotiations for use of DP next season going on I wonder?
