I have happy memories of the Odeon from back in the day : It's a very striking building, but it's also quite ugly. because something is old it doesn't make it any good. However because this is one of the last examples of this type of architecture, from a period off design that I'm interested in, I'm glad it's been saved. The people running the city of Bradford over the last 40 or so years have a lot to be ashamed of when it comes to demolishing interesting, and historic buildings: Swan Arcade which was demolished just before I arrived in Bradford and was replaced by an absourely vile looking C&A store, and the Tyrls, which in any other city would have been trsated as a gem, some of the wool warehouses were high quality attractive buildings.
Swan Arcade was replaced by some shops but not C&A which was on Broadway not Market St, which ironically was demolished 8 years ago for this Westfield site (still no bricks laid yet). JB Priestley never forgave Bradford for knocking down Swan Arcade. Incidentally, when I used to work on the demolition may years ago an old guy told me that Leeds were set to knock down all their old arcades and market but ran out of cash to do it...luckily for them. Don't forget the old Kirkgate Market too...jeez, Bradford really has lost some gems.
There are many mock ups on sites like BORG of what the Odeon could look like restored, and they look pretty good. The Beatles played their first headlining show of their first tour at the Odeon.
