C4 are due to show a documentary on the effects of the drug MDMA, (that's Ecstasy to us)
It will feature Keith Allen and I think it is some sort of investigation into whether it can have any positive use for certain mental illness like manic depression.

Any thoughts? Is it glamourising drugs and a blatant ratings puller? or just a serious attempt to discuss the matter?

It probably will be sensationalist ###### but TBH the best way to understand the effects of drugs is presumably to have some people take them?
Cheer up, RL is actually rather good

I'm given to understand that several of the Happy Mondays have precisely no recollection of the early 1990s.

why do it on tv?
because, it seems, they could not get funding from any legitimate research body, so turned to a tv company.

I read there's a former MP partaking too, a Dr Evan Harris.
And also, the 6 taking part have to have already taken it before in their lives so they know they're not intollerant/allergic/whatever.

To be honest it's nowt to write home about.

MDMA has been around for a hundred years but little was done with it for most of that time.
There has been some research involving its use, alongside psychological therapies. There are some views that it might be efficacious in assisting people with psychological problems who have difficulty talking about them, for example people with PTSD. Given its association with raves and deaths of young people, it has been very difficult to get funding for extensive research.
The US army showed interest in it in the past, as they did with many other drugs.
I would be prepared to take it as part of a clinical trial.

MDMA is good in the right environment, in a nightclub with music you really like surrounded by friends it was ace from memory. Never had any notable negative side effects though I only ever used it periodically. I'd have thought it could possibly be used in some way to help people suffering from depression.
"surely they've got to try somthing different now, maybe the little chip over the top?2

As would I if there was a programme into the effects of drinking cider.

As someone who frequently plays records to people in clubs, I have to say that I'd prefer a crowd full of smiling, MDMA-taking types to a crowd of drunken people. They'd also be preferable to a room full of people who had been dabbling in the devil's dandruff. Or horse tranquiliser for that matter.
That's if I had a choice, which I don't.
Cocaine and alcohol are much bigger problems in this day and age than MDMA. It's much less prevalent on the scene than it once was.
