Here goes (I think all these are still alive):
  • Lindsey Buckingham
  • Ry Cooder
  • Leo Kottke
  • Tinsley Ellis
  • Allan Holdsworth
  • Scotty Moore
  • David Lindley
  • Mike Keneally
  • Steve Vai
  • Alvin Youngblood Hart
Special mention: Tommy Emmanuel. I don't know his stuff at all, but there was a programme about him on the World Service a while back, and I was blown away by his beautiful playing.

I like Neil Young's playing a lot: my guitar teacher is a big admirer of his., but he doesn't quite make the ten. I think Keef is brilliant but only within the context of the stones. Mayer has a nice playing style but lacks the back catalogue to really grip me: I can only think of one song of his. I like Walter Trout a well

That's a great set, avoiding the usual "guitar gods" - always enjoyed Tom Verlaine's playing.
