I remember seeing a 'dog expert' on the BBC news saying that, by and large, people choose dogs in their own image. They are effectively a statement of how you see yourself or how you want others to see you.

The thing about this that surprises me most is that the image I had of Phil before this thread couldn't have been more different to the one he projects here.

It's now, tediously, a dog forum.

As opposed to a tedious photographer forum?

Why anyone would want to own a Rottweiler in the first place is totally beyond me, never mind encourage it to be aggressive.

My wife had a Rottie when I first met her, we've had several over the years

I agree better to have it destroyed, if you want a pet get a small or medium sized dog, or is it some sort of Penis extension!

Yeah whatever

Had it been a child making the growling noise, who didn't know any better, what would your reaction have been then?

Dogs, by law, are always required to be under control by their owners. From your own admission it sounds like your dog is too big for you to handle safely.

I reckon you should maybe look for a smaller breed.

Will have another gander at this thread later, it's got the makings of good entertainment.

Dogs recognise children as puppies, hence their affection for them, adult dogs very, very rarely attack puppies

I wonder how long it was after this incident it popped into the OP's head, "Oh, the guys on Total RL are going to bloody love this!". For sheer audacity, that's quite impressive

So I should only post what you will agree with? Weathers been ###### hasn't it?

Mmmm I notice you put "dog expert" in quotation marks, over the years I've had various breeds from "57 varieties" mongrels through Jack Russels, Border Collies, Greyhound Lurchers, Rhodesian Ridgebacks and yes, Rottweilers. None of my dogs has ever bitten anyone or attacked another dog. Roxy today was in control, she was on the lead and was pulled short a foot from reaching the idiot.

My dogs are just that, dogs, I don't have them to reinforce my view of myself or to project an image, I have them because I like them, all dogs, no matter what size, shape or breed.

I also have two cats, it will be interesting to see what the forum psychologists make of that.

To stick up for Rotties, they are big and powerful but much like Alsatians they can make wonderful pets. The missus' family has a couple and they are soft as anything and wonderful with children. I do accept that if they turned they could do a lot of damage.

Of course its down to how the owner treats the dog and behaves with it. I doubt Phil would ever want his dog to harm someone, but the attitude in the OP is a little disturbing.

I'm sorry you find it disturbing Sev, but yeah what you say above about the breed is correct. The guy walked towards us making a loud growling noise directed at my dog. Lets transpose the situation a little, an old woman walking her dog, lets ignore the breed for the moment, is approached by a stranger making a threatening growling noise, the dog reacts and the stranger backs off. Headline; Brave dog deters attacker? I'm big enough and ugly enough to look after myself, but my wife and daughter also take Roxy for walks, so what if this idiot had approached them in the same manner?.

He was an idiot and very nearly got what he deserved.

In your own words he nearly got killed by your dog. Is being an idiot worth getting murdered for?

Absolutely!

I can think of plenty of people I'd like to watch being savaged by a large ferocious dog.

Actions have consequences, so perhaps the numpty will think twice before trying to get a reaction from an animal!

If, as you say, she "nearly dragged me off my feet" then surely she "nearly" made contact with him and as a result he may "nearly" have been killed if she'd gone for his throat.

Understandable. Its not going to be easy for you to say you wished you'd not made the post in the first place or that you'd wished you'd worded it differently, given the reaction you've had.

Your own words said he nearly got his throat ripped out, to which your next words were ha ha. There pretty unanimous agreement here that your attitude to this is irresponsible and at worst criminal. Another board member has been through hell because of someone like you. Think about it.

I'm aware of what happened to another board member and I think it's pretty low of you to compare the two situations tbh

Sorry mate but if you were aware of what happened to the other board member's daughter then I have to say I find it extremely insensitive of you to have started this thread.
