I don't give a frig about american football, but this fixation with laughing stocks and rugby league needs some perspective.

Aww, was fun to watch with added biff and coaches having break downs. The dispute ended today. The real referees will be back for this week's games.

It was.
If the call in the Green Bay-Seattle match hadn't been the final, game-winning, play on Monday Night Football the replacements would still be there.
Guess we'll have go back to the Lingerie Football League to see reffing like that again.

So where did the real refs go?
Locked out by the NFL.
I imagine they did a bit of gardening, walked the dog, that sort of thing ...

I heard that but what does that mean? Was there a union dispute? Disciplinary action? Poor performance?Locked out by the NFL.

Basically, the refs wanted their pensions fixed and a pay rise. They earn about $150k a year. The pay rise they are now getting takes that up to 200k. It's a lot but in the context of the NFL it's peanuts. The league now appears to have given more ground than the refs.
Last time there was a dispute (2001) it lasted one round and the replacement refs were from the top tier of college football which is pretty close to NFL in terms of speed, crowd, shouting coaches etc. This time those officials refused to cross the metaphorical picket line and so the NFL was recruiting from very minor college leagues, high school football and, in one classic case, a referee who had been fired from the Lingerie Football League for poor performance.

Ahhh.
What about them Baltimore Charm? Could go all the way this year!
IIRC the last time we analysed deeply the LFL some poster pulled me up on my pronunciation of Linger-y with some pretentious twaddle about how Frenchies say it.

I'm all about the Chicago Bliss. Having looked them up a whole four minutes ago I reckon I'm their longest-serving fan in the United Kingdom. They should give me a prize.
You should pronounce it with a slightly worried Irish accent like in Father Ted. Anything else is basically gay.
