Tonight,s Evening Post.Got to admit i grew up hating Bramley they were more or less our City rivals from the 60,s onward and after we nearly went under early seventies they didnt want to know us as we played around at Batley , Dewsbury and even Headingley RU, however due to financial reasons they did allow us to play at McClaren Field for a couple of years before the SLS was built so lets hope they somehow get out of their present mess and survive in whatever league.
Memories of our time at McClaren Field - a memorable cup tie against Salford who we drew with - about 32 -32 if memory is right.
A defeat against a French team in the Cup - St Esteve i beleive.
Also over the years seen some good players play against us for Bramley , Peter Lister a class act who i always wanted us to sign,Chris Bowman a barnstorming prop who wrecked defences, Steve Nicholson, John Hay and Steve Langton who we did sign.Jack Austin a winger who knew only one way to the line, Jim Fiddler a goalkicking prop from Leigh who could boot a ball any distance and legends like the great Johnney Wolford and Neil Fox.
Anyone else remember them ? Lets hope they survive

Kevin Schaumkell was a good player. Always enjoyed the atmosphere at Bramley especially night games. Remember walking past the Jack Walkington place next to the ground

Think i played my first game for Featherstone at Bramley Steve did they have a coloured full back who always did a shoulder charge when he tackled you and tried to knock the s h i t out of you seem to remember him doing it to Keith Bridges who had to be taken off lolTonight,s Evening Post.Got to admit i grew up hating Bramley they were more or less our City rivals from the 60,s onward and after we nearly went under early seventies they didnt want to know us as we played around at Batley , Dewsbury and even Headingley RU, however due to financial reasons they did allow us to play at McClaren Field for a couple of years before the SLS was built so lets hope they somehow get out of their present mess and survive in whatever league.

I think the player you refer to col is a maori full bk called Johnny Wilson who i can just about remember at the old Barley Mow ground which was at the back of the Barley Mow pub which still stands today.By the way next year will be the 50TH anniversary of when we played Australia at Parkside in 1963, i was only 9 at the time and they let us off Hunslet Carr school in the afternoon, i think we lost about 14-4 but gave them a fright.I remember a massive fight when every player seemed to get involved and i think 2 got sent off.How times change, in them days we actually ( G.B.) used to beat the Aussies.

I must be a few years older than you KOL as I remember the Wednesday afternoon game against Australia at Parkside. I was about 16 and had just started work at the Education offices in Leeds. When I asked my boss if I could have the afternnon off to watch Hunslet v Australia I'll always rember his reply "are you at home or away?"
Why can't we adopt Bramley as our unofficial reserve team ? I believe our contract allows us to play more games at SLS than we currently do, and we could always give our fringe players a run out with them.

For the Summer and Winter teams, some players double up and play all year round,i know that Bramley had about 4 players from the Old Boys and a few Queens players aswell,so Bramley do lose players towards the end of the season, due to the winter clubs calling there players back..........I don't know if its a case of not enough top player for the amount of teams in Leeds, but would be a shame if there lost again......was it because the ground dose'nt meet the league requirements and they have'nt a league to play in now?

Johnny Wilson played in the late 50's I believe plus the first half of the sixties. He was a dirty bu**er who wouldn't let you past even if you got rid of the ball first. I don't know if that timescale fits in with Suzzy's playing career.

i bet you were at the aussie match gabby, was it john grittiths who got sent off with an aussie winger called Cleary? my memory of the aussie team at that time would be a threequarter line of Johns, Irvine, Gasnier, Langlands, Cleary, i think the halfbacks were Muir and Smith, amazing i can forget where i put the tv remote or the car keys in 5 mins but can remember the aussie team from 50 year ago...think its called selective memory lol.

They showd interest in trying to join the NCL, but due to them not meeting the minimum criterea they werent concidered.

think it was 1967 the six tackle rule hadnt come in then i do know Les Tonks was our best hooker even though he was a prop we won the league in 71 -72 then i retired but that full back always remained in my memories lol.Johnny Wilson played in the late 50's I believe plus the first half of the sixties.
