I always think of glory hunters as choosing a team that will likely bring them success. Surely in the All-Ireland your team (ie your county) chooses you. You can't switch to another county just because they're winning (unless you're dual-qualified).

I can understand why people like "football" but hurling is just insane. I wouldn't stand on the sideline let alone play and yet the Irish never seem to acknowledge it as a dangerous sport.

Oh, I don't know, the players wear helmets now. :)

Seriously though, it does hurt when you get hit by a hurley, or by a sliotar. :o It's character building though.

No need for the inverted commas. It is football.

Yeah, you end up with a fully developed character, but a body that's ###### :)

True but I don't think of it that way.

Neither do I if I'm completely honest. But to the people concerned, it is football.

One thing I really cannot stand about soccer fans, is their (in general) ignorance of the term soccer and their insistence that it is a US or foreign term.

It's football in my family and the other game is soccer.

This is a comparatively new thing for soccer fans. All the association football magazines I grew up reading - Roy of the Rovers, Shoot, Match - had absolutely no problem with the word at all. It was remarked upon that in the US they only used soccer, never football, but it was understood that 'we' used both.
Cheer up, RL is actually rather good

I think it is a new thing too. We always used to say soccer or footy and nobody ever said 'its not soccer'. And I'm talking football mad kids here.

It's a tough one. The natural thing to do is try and defend cautiously but this is actually far more dangerous and leaves you more at risk from getting whacked in the head. It's safer to go in aggressively and get closer to the player swinging for the ball.

In my case I could have chosen several counties on family grounds, but Fermanagh it is. It's where at least one strain of my mother's family is from, and it's also a lovely place (mainly). Sad to say I do know people who have latched on to more successful counties on the basis of tenuous family connections. Glory hunters are everywhere.

Maybe you are a lack of glory hunter. ;) :D

Oldham RL, Torquay United, Ottawa Senators, Fermanagh ... my God you're right. For £5 I will not support your team, cos if I do, they'll never win squat.

That's probably more of RL heartlands thing. As kids we said "footy" or "football" or maybe "togger" but not soccer but I don't think that we would have strongly objected to the word.

Neither me nor any of my mates were remotely into RL at the time so it can't have been that.

I was in Bury with friends who genuinely couldn't have told you the difference between rugby union and rugby league.

Maybe so but you were still in Bradford. I believe that local papers in Leeds used "soccer" back then. They certainly didn't in Harrogate.
