Can't imagine why you'd want to make a story like that up...

It got their name on an article in the Guardian.

If he were that way inclined surely it would be simpler to just sell an article to the Daily Mail about how latest "research" shows that immigrants cause cancer

Indeed they do...
"Journalists are meant to be neutral, for God's sake." - Stephen 'Wiggy' Jones

"Perhaps it would be better that future criticism of sports be made on the narrow basis of what is being discussed, without reference to other sports, unless those sports offer a solution to the problem in hand." - Brian 'Pigface' Moore

"What happens in rugby union? A player takes the ball, moves forward a little and gets tackled. A whole load of players then roll about on the ground. Pheep! The referee gives a penalty." - Simon Barnes

Turns out there's a fair number of people who think this story is a crock.

And here's a blog with some reasons why: http://paulclarke.co...he-bell-trolls/

That's quite a persuasive article.

Like many people I assumed that the Guardian had checked its sources before publishing the original piece.

Perhaps they didn't.

The original article seems to be quite novelised, rather than a conventional journalistic piece. There may be an element of truth in it but there appears to have been a lot of polishing it for the telling it, if that is the case.
