Cumbria 38 South Sydney Juniors 12
Tri Series County champions Cumbria inflicted South Sydney Juniors their first defeat of their four match tour with a seven try salvo over the
tourists who took the lead after four minutes and also scored the opening try of the second half to cut the Cumbria lead to four points.
Cumbria made sure there was to be no comeback with four unanswered tries as they cut loose with some superb running rugby to delight the crowd. The
highlight of the game was a hat-trick from winger Stuart Tippit (Dalton), but his performance pipped by David Lowery (Kells) who created problems for
South’s throughout the game with his quick play the balls and superb running from half back.
The game got off to a superb start as Cumbria took the attack to South’s and had the opening try chalked in the opening few minutes. South’s soaked
up the opening pressure and scored after five minutes with an excellent show and go by scrum half Connor Higgins who broke the line to race 40
metres downfield draw in last line of defence Sam Forrester (Maryport) and pass to the supporting Isaac Tautaiolefua to race over. Jason Trindell
added the extras to make it 6-0.
It was end to end stuff with big hits by both sets of forwards and following good Cumbria pressure the home side levelled the game on 15
minutes as Paul Carter (Millom) burst through a South’s defensive hole to go over the line and Ross Gainford (Kells) added the goal.
On 22 minutes Cumbria doubled their score to take the lead after the pack put pressure on down the left channel of South’s defence and Gainford’s
superb long flat pass found Tippit to squeeze in at the corner for a well taken try and Gainford added a superb touchline conversion 12-6.
South’s Tim Bennett replied and broke clear down the left hand side to be only to be bundled into touch superbly by Forrester.
Both teams were testing each other’s defence until on the half hour centre Scott Lofthouse (Kells) broke down the left channel and fed Tippett who
again scored in the corner to make it 16-6.
Two minute later South’s pressed and Tautaiolefua took an excellent flat pass to burst through and pass to the supporting Higgins who was superbly
tackled by Lofthouse.
A dangerous tackle on Perry Singleton (Barrow Island) gave Cumbria a penalty and the home team opted to take the tap and pushed for a score only
to be denied by superb South’s defence.
Second half Cumbria pressure saw Chris Warren (Millom) break the line and feed Lofthouse who was halted and then Richard George (Seaton Rangers)
threw a forward pass to deny Dan Sayle (Dalton) a try.
Some good work from South’s saw Higgins break down the middle and feed supporting Ben Lindegaard to score and Trindell kicked the conversion to
cut the lead to four points.
Cumbria’s continued good work saw them gain their reward on 50 minutes, good play from George saw him pass out to Forrester who fed the strong
running Sayle to score and Gainsford added the extras to make it 22-12.
A good kick from South’s Higgins found fullback Tautaiolefua who collected the ball and as he went in to score he was superbly tackled on the Cumbria
line to keep him out.
Cumbria increased their lead with Tippit completing his hat-trick after great break from Tom Sibley (Millom) who found Lofthouse and his quick fire
pass put the winger in at the corner on the hour.
In complete command in the forwards and backs Cumbria played some great football and four minutes later hooker Lee Edmondson (Millom) sneaked under
from the play the ball for another six pointer.
As South’s tired Cumbria scored their final converted try on 74 minutes when Forrester and Marcus O’ Brien (Millom) combined to put Adam Nicholson
(Dalton) in under posts and Gainford kicked his fifth goal.
