Lancashire 10 South Sydney Juniors 28
South Sydney Juniors returned to winning ways on their third game of the tour with a classy win over a Lancashire which will be thinking about the numerous tries scoring chances they had to lead the game at the half time. As it was Souths scored three unanswered tries in the first and doubled that total in the second half in game played throughout in intermittent heavy showers. Credit though to Lancashire who battled on and had the last word with two late tries and one chalked off in the closing seconds as South had been reduced to twelve men following a sin-binning.
In a beaten side Lancashire’s David Jones (Widnes West Bank) put in a great shift never taking a backward step to be named as his sides man of the match and for South’s Isaac Tautaiolefua was a constant thorn against the ‘Red Rose’ which was also highlighted by a superb break against run of play when he went over for a 60 metre run in the corner for his team’s third try. It started badly for Lancashire as they knocked on from the kick off on their own twenty metre line but they weathered the storm with a good defensive set, went downfield and lost the ball.
Souths then scored two quick fire tries the first on four minutes following a scrum for another Lancashire knock on. On the third tackle Steve Brown crashed over under the posts and Tautaiolefua added the extras. A few minutes later after the home side had lost possession following a superb ball and all tackle from Daryl Brennan, Ben Lindegaad and skipper Troy Bushby combined for winger Dean White to score the first of his brace out wide unmarked to make it 10-0.
It looked ominous for Lancashire but after a few more errors they gained confidence and for a twenty minute spell were camped exclusively in the Souths half. But Lancashire squandered opportunity after opportunity especially in the last five metres when a try looked a certainty. Credit should also be given to Souths tackling as they couldn’t get out of their own half. The only chance they got though came on the half hour and did they take it, from nothing at the play the ball Tautaiolefua from a standing start saw a gap sprinted though and went in at the left corner for a four pointer.
The second half saw both sides blow a couple of chances until Souths took control of the game again with three further tries. From a penalty they ran the ball down the short side and Bushby went through a gap to score out wide, then following another Tautaiolefua break who was stopped five metres from the line, the ball switched quickly to the left for Wara Makita-Waki to go over. Then on the last tackle a dummy and show and go saw Lindegaad break away down the left channel, he found Bushby who flicked the ball out for White to score his second and Rob Tierney who came off the bench kicked he final one of his three attempts.
It looked as if Lancashire were going to be kept scoreless but following a penalty they threw the ball along the line and Jones was there to finish it off. From the restart and following a penalty try went for broke and quick hands saw Anthony Houghton (Wigan St Patricks) pass outside for Ryan Rogers (Pilkington Recs) to go under the ‘H’s and Shaun Quinn (Thatto Heath Crusaders) added the extras. Souths Matt Bassett was then sin-binned for professional foul as he threw the ball away following a penalty which resulted in Rogers having a try chalked off for a knock on.
The win is a big boost for South’s as they prepare for their Test match against the BARLA Great Britain Lions at Sale RUC this Saturday 6th October 2.00pm.
