The RFL today announced a new compeition for the 2013 Super League season, bringing to five (5) the number of trophies up for grabs.

Making the announcement at Red Hall today, Nigel Wood stated:

"We're all really looking forward to the Stobart Super League grand final at the weekend between Warrington Wolves and Leeds Rhinos, and trust that it will be a spectacle to match the Carnegie Challenge Cup final held at Wembley in August.

"However, at the RFL we are always mindful of our heritage of innovation, and also of the need to increase the opportunities our top clubs have to compete for trophies.

"To this end, we have - in full consultation with all member clubs founded in 1872 - decided to launch a new cup competition for the 2013 Super League season. Unlike other cup competitions with their tiresome series of rounds and matches that determine progress to a final we have decided that we will do something different.

"In May of each season from 2013 onwards, Wigan Warriors will elect which other member club they will get to play in the final of our new cup competition, which we are calling 'The Bridesmaids Trophy'. Holding the final in May will allow Wigan to be at their most fearsome, rip-snorting best, and allow them to rightfully claim the title of Moral Champions of the Universe, bestowed on them in perpetuity by Maurice Lindsay and a few old dears in jam-jar bottom glasses.

"Should Wigan lose the game, then we'll probably still give them the cup anyway. I reckon they deserve it. Plus, Phil Clarke's been on the phone every day threatening me with the rugby gods unless I sort Wigan something out."

Speaking at Old Trafford ahead of Saturday's Grand Final, Warrington coach Tony Smith said:

"At last, the RFL have done something to right the great wrong of Wigan not being actual champions. They ripped it up in March and April, and surely deserve recognition for that.

"The Bridesmaids Trophy is a breath of fresh air, and the answer to all Wigan fans' prayers."

bit childish methinks, and not funny.

What does it mean
This tearjerking scene
Beamed into my home
That it moves me so much
Why all the fuss
It's only two humans being.

Similar to the "player profiles" on the England squad thread.

You had me excited for a genuine, innovative new idea from the RFL.

Instead I read something which can only be described as... ridiculous.

Particularly ridiculous that you took the time to write this.

If you are going to do this sort of thing it has to be either really subtle or absolutely over the top.

funny idea very poorly executed.

It might have been funny had we not won a league and cup in last two years. For that reason....it's a fail! :-) maybe saints would of been a better target. :-)

It's actually not a bad idea, how about a KO-cup competition for SL clubs only.

IDEA:

This years top 6 clubs get a 1st round bye,
the bottom 8 Clubs play each other 7v14 8v13 9v12 11v10
Winners play Highest v Lowest qualifiers, remainder play each other
Winners of that round are drawn with the Bye teams to make an 8 team straight draw format, with only the top 2 teams being seeded as Home ties, and keeping the club call theme going, the top 2 teams can choose who they want to get beat by in the 1/4 finals.

You could call it the Superleague Cup, sponsored by Rugby League Publications
