The BBC website has run a story that Sheffield may put a licence application in for the next round. Interesting development and I wish them good luck and all the other applicants too.

London have been in SL for how long now, the crowds arn't exactly brilliant despite being in a "big city." If they could manage to get to th 2k mark I'd agree there may be potential their. But after a championship winning season and still only in the low thousands, I can't see their being much potential for a sustainable SL club.

I can see why it would be of concern but if Sheffield are comfortable with it and its just a matter of meeting the pointless 2500 average its pathetically easy to achieve/manipulate.

Could be good thing. A big city with an existing rugby league core. Two mediocre soccer teams and no union to speak of. (Just) outside the heartlands so no problems regarding overlapping fan bases (a la Cas, Waky, fev). It would, of course need the right leadership and financial backing to make a go of it.

I've always been of the opinion that if we are to expand beyond the M62 it should be done gradually with no great geographical leaps.In this way away support can still be counted upon and it would not be too dificult for any amature teams that emerge in the area to find reasonably local opposition rather than having to set up a whle new structure at that level.

Why would a new attempt in Bradford be different?

In Sheffield, why not, different times, maybe new investment, who knows. There is potential, they won the cup, they drew 9,000 plus for a game against Widnes. They were in to 3 to 40000 attendance range when they were taken over for the million pound merger bribe by Huddersfield, sorry, I meant to say amalgamated with the Giants, which is as good as, if not better than, London's attendances at present. Sheffield is the archetypical big city that is supposed to be the future of the game.

If they think they can meet the criteria and have a good application, who are you to decry their right to SL?

No, but they have half a dozen south eastern born lads in Superleague now. Sheffield have produces none after nearly 30 years existence.

I'd keep an eye on Doncaster if they can build bridges with the amateur clubs in the area, I've heard that the board of Doncaster Rovers want to take the club over along with all the other sporting bodies that use the Keepmoat to form one sporting club.
