there is no such thing as full time professionalism in any sport. Even David Beckham has business interests-advertising bannickers and marketing his own brand of perfume and the rest.
All pro sports players have outside money making interests.
The issue surrounds how much elite players can be sustainably paid. That's what the salary cap is for. The salary cap gets breached, and evaded, but it is better than what existed before. Rovers and clubs' 'full time' players, are gererally afforded by employing them as part of their community operation-projects which aren't funded by the club.
Professional Rugby Players quite rightly want to maximise their earnings whilst they can.
In the UK they can;
take their abilities as far as they will go in the UK game
play in France
play pro rugby union
play in Australia.
If the earnings of elite players drop below a certain level, then who can blame them if they exdamine their options?

What are the alternatives,Gav?. Do we stumble along, blindly accepting the "backwards" rulings of the RL, clubs spending way beyond their capacity, all of which, are, IMO bringing a slow but sure demise of the game that we have all known and loved The game is slowly and surely being run into the ground, especially the lower divisions.Some of the views in this thread are so backwards its frightening.
I'm just going to pretend you are all being really sarcastic instead.

All pro sports players have outside money making interests. that's a big assumption, and i don't believe it.
Agreed.
Nevertheless, there are only so many places within the game for retired players and players would be fools if they did not plan for their retirement (from the game). One bad tackle and it could happen tomorrow,
Well, if you were playing for Scotland or Ireland, that is.
