
The third Italian Rugby League Cup is set to begin later this year with the Sicilian Rugby League (Spartans Catania) recently confirming two new teams will join the Sicilian Regional stages of the 2012-13 ‘Coppa Italia di Rugby a XIII’ that is a knockout cup acting as a second tier program for the Federazione Italiana RFL (FIRFL).
Xiridia Rugby League, based an hour south of “league stronghold” Catania and Acireale Rugby League (30 mins north of Catania) will join 2011-2012 sides from Sicily including; Briganti Librino XIII, Rectores Belpasso RL, CUS Catania 13 and Messina XIII.
Rectores Belpasso won the 2012 Coppa Italia having beaten off competition from 11 other teams from Sicily, Umbria, Lazio and Reggio Emilia.
In other news, former Italian Azzurri (National) player, plus key member and player of the Spartans Catania Rugby League club since it was formed in 2010, Johnny Grasso (Italian-Australian) will return to Australia having been living in Catania since 2003 playing rugby union for Amatori Catania and rugby league for Spartans Catania.
