The Political Animals RLFC has announced William Hill, the UK’s largest bookmaker, as its new main sponsor.

The club, made up of politicians of all levels and from all parties, plays charitable and representative sides and includes the likes of Lords, MPs and Councillors amongst its members.

William Hill’s sponsorship enables the club to play games and provide funding to charities. With 2,370 betting shops providing betting opportunities on a wide range of sporting and non-sporting events, William Hill is one of the world's leading betting and gaming companies, employing more than 15,000 people. Founded in 1934, William Hill has made a significant investment in Leeds and the North East, with close to 800 jobs in Leeds city centre through its innovative R&D and Trading teams, and a further 2000 betting shop jobs across the North East.

On making the announcement, Club Captain Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland said “Betting and gaming companies play a significant role in sport, particularly in the world’s oldest professional game. William Hill’s sponsorship enables politicians to experience the game on the field, understand what it means to be a player of our great game, and see what good the game does for communities.”

Lewis Rogers, Public Affairs Manager at William Hill, gave his thoughts on the agreement: “William Hill are pleased to support the Political Animals Rugby League Football Club in its promotion of the sport and charitable work. Rugby League is just one of the many sports that William Hill offers markets on and it is one that is of great interest to many of our customers. As the UK’s biggest bookmaker, William Hill are proud of our contribution to communities and local economies - providing jobs, training opportunities and a commitment to responsible gambling.

So if it's OK for a betting company to be main sponsor to an RL side made up of politicians, why the apparent problem with having a betting company as principal competition sponsor for Super League?

I think the fact that the team is made up of politicians make the betting company seem saintly in comparison!

Betting is so much more acceptable than alcohol and tobacco sponsorship. I can't believe you question it!

I don't see how that is at all relevant?
