The Parliamentary Group League Group have announced Rugby League Cares, the sport’s new charity dedicated to supporting the rugby league family and its local communities, as a new Partner of the Group.

The Group, which brings together Members of both Houses of Parliament from all parties, doesn’t receive any public funding and is reliant on partners to enable its continued activities. It has the singular role to “promote the sport of rugby league football.”

Rugby League Cares brings together the existing rugby league family of charities - the Rugby League Foundation, the RFL Benevolent Fund and the RFL Heritage Trust - into a single location to enhance the good work currently undertaken. It focusses on four areas of the game: Grants; Welfare; Heritage; and the Benevolent Fund. More information about the charity and its aims can be found at www.rugbyleaguecares.org.

On making the announcement Group Chairman, Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland said “we are delighted to welcome Rugby League Cares as a partner of the Parliamentary Group. We are a particularly active Group and we can’t function without support.

“Alongside the RFL, I can think of no other body who shares our remit to ‘support the sport of rugby league football’ as well as Rugby League Cares. Separately the different charities all did a fantastic job, but with this new model they can take that good work to the next level. We in the Group are looking forward to working closely together to ensure the growth of support into the game.”

Terry Flanagan, Chairman of Rugby League Cares added “we’ve already seen the cross-party support Rugby League Cares has through recent Motions in the House of Commons. Our purpose is to celebrate and protect the sport’s heritage and traditions, take care of members of the rugby league family and help secure the future of the game by sourcing funding and supporting projects aimed at the grassroots of the game.”

“Rugby league needs to ensure that Members of Parliament are aware of our purpose and Members of the Parliamentary Group have already offered us great support.”
