Wigan St Patricks ARLFC
Back the back BARLA Under 17’s Tri County Series champions Lancashire are now eighty minutes from making it a hat-trick of titles after a nail biting ‘War of the Roses’ 19-18 win over Yorkshire which was a great advert for the youth game.
When Yorkshire came back to level the game up for the second time with tenminutes remaining it was game on but a minute later Lancashire scrum half Joe Prior (Wigan St Patricks) stood up the plate to slot over a 25 metre drop goal to break Yorkshire’s heart to the delight of a good vocal crowd.
In a pulsating finale the game could have gone either way with both sides having done more than enough to win it but the ‘Red Rose’ held on for victory which include great performances from Lancashire’s man of the match loose forward Kieron Sherritt (Wigan St Patricks) with his driving runs and tackling and Yorkshire prop forward Luke Robinson (West Bowling) who never took a backward step for the ‘White Rose’.
Yorkshire’s big pack began the brightest and continued to cause Lancashire problems throughout the game and after driving downfield they took the lead on 11 minutes when winger Shaun Allen (Oulton Raiders) drove over from close range and Jordan Gale (Oulton Raiders added the extras.
Lancashire weathered the storm though and levelled the game up five minutes later when their pack went downfield and from the play the ball prop forward Liam Naughton (Thatto Heath Crusaders) had the drive and strength to score and Curtis Edwards Hampson (Wigan St Patricks) levelled the game up.
Yorkshire’s pack were in control but on the stroke of halftime on 35 minutes Lancashire took the lead against run of play after a superb 30 metre breakaway from winger Sam Baggerley (Wigan St Patricks) to score and Hampson made it 12-6.
Yorkshire’s pack continued to dominate the second forty and that saw them level again on 44 minutes when substitute Vinny Cross (Stanley Rangers) barged his way over and Gale added the extras.
Four minutes later though Yorkshire’s indiscipline let them down and Hampson landed a penalty for a two point lead, which they increased to six when substitute Neil Allen (Bold Miners) crossed in the corner. Crucially Hampson couldn’t add the extras which would have given them an eight point buffer.
Yorkshire was having problems with their ball control in going in for tries but they got it right on 65 minutes when hooker Cameron Bruce (Dewsbury Moor) drove over and Gale’s conversion made it 18 all.
On their next attack Lancashire went downfield and it was game over as Prior’s drop kick stole the game for Lancashire.
Game 2 will see Yorkshire play Cumbria at Sharlston Rovers ARLFC next Sunday 21st October
