I'm kind of glad this wasn't in the actual finished episode. It's a bit schmaltzy. Sometimes it's good to leave a few loose ends for the audience to tie up in their own heads.

Yeah, I agree actually. One point I took away from the actual episode was one minute Rory and Amy were there, the next minute gone forever and there is nothing The Doctor can do about it. That ending - whilst quite cool - is a little too neat and tidy and would have taken away from the impact on The Doctor.
