Russian Rugby League Club Feature Part I: Vereya Bears

Considered to be the largest of our clubs, there’s no doubt that Vereya Bears are leading the way in terms of both on field and off field progress.
A bit about the town: With a population of just over 5,000 people, Vereya is located a little over 100 kilometres south-west of our capital Moscow.
The Bears are the only sporting team truly synonymous with the town of Verya and the locals consider it their own. The history of the town goes back some 700 years and we are very proud to be associated with it.
A bit about the team:
Vereya play out of Vereya Stadium which is where many of Russia’s interenational Rugby League games have been held including our World Cup qualifying game against Lebanon in October last year when we went down 0-32.
The biggest honour for Vereya Bears was their appearance in the 2008 Challenge Cup where they were beaten by Leigh Miners 64-12.
Vereya Bears were first formed in 1995 but weren’t officially registered until 1998 when they first adopted the name “Bears”.
Vereya have over 200 players participating throughout the club at various levels.

Club Feature Part 2: Шторм (Moscow Storm Rugby League Club)

The Storm are a Moscow based Rugby League club who have been playing Rugby League for several year now, all be it under alternate names.
The Storm have based their emblem around that of Australia Melbourne Storm Rugby League Club. The club is seen as having a very strong first team, with most putting the Storm only behind Russian giants Vereya Bears (Whom our last club feature was on).
The clubs colours are sky blue.
Whilst the Storm have seen success mostly due to the hard work of those in and around the club, they have benefited also from the migration of Vereya players to Moscow.
Coached by the legendary Otradnov Alexander, who has played for the Russian national team at Wembley Stadium.

A bit from the Storm website about the club:
We are strong, smart and beautiful boys and girls, we have to endure the pain and do not deceive the judges rolling around on the field with horrible grimace as footballers. Oval ball we dearer round, at the end of the game, we shake hands competitors, and our fans do not fight with each other and swearing.

There are already 200! We dream about how our children will one day become Olympic champions, and "Storm" the best club on the planet! So, welcome to the "Storm", join us

Russian Rugby League Club Feature Part 3 - MGPU Rugby League Club

Moscow State Pedagogical University (MGPU), known for educating Raisa Gorbachova, (the wife of Raisa Gorbachova), authors Dmitry Vodennikov, and Yuliy Kim can now add another feather to their cap in the form of being home of one of the brightest, most potential filled Rugby League clubs in Russia. Well, we're pretty realistic that the average person won't put our Rugby League team in the same league as Raisa Gorbachova, and co. but we hold them in just as high regard!

Captained by Victor Tolstov, the squad of 25 players is made of entirely of former Rugby Union players who fell in love with the great game of Rugby League. The club clours are green and black. Apart from studying, these players spend their time learning English and playing Rugby League amongst other things.

The team is coached by Vladimir Kozlov who is the university sports instructor. We were proud to have Vladimir attend Russian Rugby League National Team training camp this year and even more proud to have 3 MGPU players representing Russia in games against Germany, Italy and Serbia in the 2012 Euro Shield.

This is the first year that MGPU have participated in the Russian Rugby League Championship. Watch out for this club in the future!

RUSSIA RUGBY LEAGUE CLUB FEATURE: PART 5 SCHELKOVO PANDAS

Schelkovo is a city located in the Moscow Oblast/Region. It has a population of a little over 100,000 people. It's origins date all the way back to the 16th century, although it was

officially granted "town" status in 1925. Whilst this recognising was an important event in the towns history, we're pretty confident the establishment of the Schelkovo Rugby League club is just as big. Well, maybe we overestimate the importance of our Rugby League Club but the point is we hold them in a very high regard.
In reality, most locals in Schelkovo probably wouldn't be aware of our club, this is something that the Schelkovo Rugby League Club hopes to change.

We want to help create awareness that there is a fledgling sporting club right on their doorstep playing the greatest game of all, Rugby League.

Considered by Russian Rugby League enthusiasts to the "new kids on the block", Schelkovo Rugby League Club took up the game of Rugby Leauge only a year or so ago. Drawing many of their players from Moscow Storm members who have relocated to the area, they are considered to be a fairly young club in terms of age and experience. Coach Andrey Volkov plans to change this though. Captained by Dmitry Astakhov, we're confident that SchelkovoRL has a bright future.

Watch out for the Pandas!!!

That is one of the most unusual club names I have come across. In a sport which showcases speed, strength and physicality you would expect to find clubs with names such as Bulls, Tigers, Wolves, Dragons...but to choose an animal which is famous for eating bamboo and doing absolutely nothing else seems remarkable. The vodka must have been flowing freely the night the naming committee got together! Anyway all the best to the Pandas and here is hoping that they can attract sponsorship from Edinburgh Zoo.

I bet there are a few Aussie teams called the Koalas and that has to be one step above a sloth for dynamism.
