There's a cyclist with a bike configuration like that near us. It's never bothered me or anyone else I know who's seen him. As a fair weather cyclist myself though I try and keep off the main roads as I've nearly been run off the road a few times.

I cycled pretty much everywhere I went up to the middle of the 80s when, having been knocked off my bike 3 times in the space of a month (once deliberately, the guy did time) I decided cyclists and motorists are too risky a mix.

There's a guy near where I work who uses one of those bikes. Although it has two tall pennants flying from the back, I certainly wouldn't feel safe using one on a busy road.

Having been a cyclist myself, it seems nowadays too many are taking chances. Twice in the space of a month I have nearly been knocked over by people cycling on the pavement, whilst some think nothing of going through traffic lights on red. That said, there are motorists who do the same when going through on red. And don't get me going on groups of cyclists who ride three abreast!

It seems as if this guy is one for asserting his rights, a member of the Awkward squad as it were, but....Stanton's comments are surely a wind up!

Having read the article John I thought the cyclist isn't doing much wrong. He's not done anything illegal (according to the police), it just seems like the councillor is venting on a problem he perceives, which isn't really important.

And I agree Saint Billinge. cyclists who go on the pavement are well out of order.

Those types of bikes seem dangerous to me. Cyclists should make every effort to be visible to other road users.

The bloke's got every right to ride his recumbent if he so wishes but you couldn't pay me to go out on the road on one. They look like suicide machines.

I'm sure they are more comfortable, aerodynamic etc and there's no reason why they should actually be illegal.

But I'm not sure there's enough money anywhere could persuade me to go on the road in one.

Plenty of recumbent cycles in Pennine Yorkshire, plus tandems, three wheelers and general velocipedes. I think recumbents are meant to be more energy efficient for the rider than conventional bicycles.

Maybe the Cllr ought to improve his driving and look more carefully.

I like the thought of the chap's wife following him around in a van.
