Agreed, companies don't want to get bad mouthed in forums like this.

yup. people shouldnt underestimate this. i get a report weekly which shows me all the comments that week about my product area in the company i work for, on all areas if sicial media.
When we release some pr, the comments are all good - i cringe when i think what the response would be to my company sponsoring rl.

So would it be likely that the reaction to, say, the Stobart deal on places like here and twitter would have been noted?

Of course. How much attention Stobart give to social media, I'm not sure, but they do seem to be protective of their brand.

I get comments provided from twitter, facebook etc. as well as forums.

100% companies have departments that actually put a value on the PR in terms of how much it would cost to get the same exposure from marketing. They also have negative values for how much it would cost to put it right etc. the "Risk" departments of major corporations also include people who work out the corporate risk of bad PR for different projects or possible things going wrong (Starbucks for example would have been working out the relative amount they needed to pay to put right the bad press they were getting)

So yes bad mouthing Stobarts on here would have been noted and there will be companies that due to places like this would not touch RL with a barge poll.

Most unreasonable.

Could someone like Heinz, Marstons or Theaksons sponsor SL? Or should the RFL be looking for 'giants' (who pay tax in the UK) with loads of money?

They could. Why don't we see what the new Commercial Director comes up with. I'm sure it'll be reasonably high up on his agenda...

Personally I don't care too much who it is, as long as the partnership delivers for both our game and the company.

I remember people being somewhat disappointed with the sponsorship with Homeowner Friendly Society (engage) when it was announced, yet I think that was a successful sponsorship.

I would also count Heinz in as a giant.

Sadly Happy Dave ales are dead in regards to most sponsorships nowadays, and Heinz is a small ticket item OK for a minor partner but for a large naming rights deal forget it.The RFL/SL really is between the devil and the deep blue sea at the moment:( on a regional basis its almost impossible for them) the only way a major blue chip will stump up major cash is with the expansion of the comp into europe (France) and even then it will still be difficult. Most of the major new money is coming out of russia and china at the moment however the problem is they are both insular to rugby (Both codes) the RU world cup 7,s is being held in Moscow in June 2013 and so far there is only one sponsor a bank.CM

Aye, the Guinness Premiership, Hieneken Cup and the F.A. Cup sponsored by Budweiser are smalltime.

Their money (if they are indeed interested) would be just as good as anybody elses.

All this idle speculation and snobbery towards perfectly major companies that may or may not be interested is completely pointless. In my opinion of course.

Just let the new Commercial Manager do his job.

Yeah, very well said, however the Rugby Union Premiership is now sponsored by Aviva (Insurance Company).

The Engage partnership has definitely been extremely successful, and still is with Community grants and supporting the Steve Prescott Foundation. However sadly I can understand why whingers whinged about the deal, as unfortunately they aren't very well known outside of the North West.

NON of the above you have mentioned are ALES these are the beers that continue to do well however they will not show any interest in RL in its current state as it is far to local.By ales i mean the likes of Theakstones etc whose annual budget for marketing BTW is less than £ 200K.CM

There was only one other option at the time 888,and anyway ENGAGE IMHO have been the most active sponsor that RL has ever had with only GILLETTE coming anyway near them (pre P an G) in terms of activity within RLCM

Yes, he worked for the FA & Manchester City FC before the RFL too. Started about 6 months ago.

Heinz are a massive company by the way, one of the biggest in the World. They have 50% of the market share in the US

Just think how many products of theirs you have in your house

If we could have them involved it would be fantastic
