The NRL won't register the new contract manly want to give to Brett Stewart because they are over the salary cap for next season - yes over the $5 million cap!
I've read that they are over by $300,000.
Sea Eagles have the auditors in to try to solve their contracts problems. They let some expensive players go at the end of the 2012 season but they are struggling to keep their 2013 player salaries anywhere near the limit allowed.

The salary cap auditors seem to be well on top of the clubs player wage structures and nip any problems in the bud very early.

Meanwhile over in England salary cap breaches are dealt with 12 months after the event and usually by a minimal fine or a points deduction that has no effect on the club.

The NRL need to be applauded on how they deal with policing the cap

Yet Sydney clubs are still over the cap,or asking for 'special exemptions'
They'll never stop the brown paper bag culture,but now clubs are leaving 'over the cap' ###### bits as camouflage.

As BR says the problem is not just down to B Stewart at Sea Eagles. The desire to have Izzy Folau back in RL has come up against a similar problem with salary cap difficulties again at Eels. The NRL auditor won't allow them to spread his cost over two years of the salary cap and won't let Eels give him a convenient cut price deal. The auditor has given him a value of $400,000 a year and won't let Eels play with that number by cutting other players wages or manipulating the time span etc.

They may be policing the cap well but I think they are going too far with the Folau situation. Surely the individual clubs should manage their player salary budgets. If Parra want to heavily back-end load a contract surely that is up to them.

I can understand the NRL are worried that Parra will not be able to stay under the cap in future years, but surely that needs to be dealt with at the time with strong penalties and sanctions.
