Grouped around the TV sets
They ran down every lead
They repeated every test
They checked out all the data on their lists
And then the alien anthropologists
Admitted they were still perplexed
But on eliminating every other reason
For our sad demise
They logged the only explanation left
This species has amused itself to death
No tears to cry no feelings left
This species has amused itself to death

An alternative list which is almost as strong, in no particular order:
Laura Trott, Jason Kenny, Victoria Pendleton, Hannah Cockcroft, Jonnie Peacock, Charlotte DuJardin, Lee Pearson, Luke Campbell, Carl Froch, Ian Poulter, Luke Donald, Greg Rutherford, Alistair Brownlee, Louis Smith, Pete Wilson, Ed McKeever, Sophie Christiansen, Jade Jones
You can add Johnny Brownlee and Leanda Cave to that list as well. Both won two triathlon world titles this year.

Claire Balding is on BBC Breakfast. Said it was probably the greatest shortlist ever and plenty of amazing athletes, such as Kev Sinfield, could of got on the list in other years.
She's a good lass!

It's an impressive list. If they'd swapped Rory McIlroy with someone who'd won a proper event I'd be even happier.
Any combo (excluding the golfist) of that shortlist would be fine by me.

You can add Johnny Brownlee and Leanda Cave to that list as well. Both won two triathlon world titles this year.
In any other year, Alastair Cook and Heather Watson may well have been on that list as well.

SPOTY is rubbish.
This is true.
But any excuse to abuse golfers for their privileged position within the sporting establishment, eh?

I was at a waste management seminar last week and Ellie Simmons' dad was there. Not that I know him or spoke to him.

I think you have mistaken this for the uninteresting trivial facts threadThat Bradley Wiggins documentary on Sky ... "A Year in Yellow" is brilliant.

Me too. He is the most accomplished of the 12 and his golds were won against determined (and world champion) opposition, with the final one of them being the toughest to get.I'll be voting for David Weir.

He is a superb athlete and when considering the range of distances you may have a point. But winning the TDF is by far the highest achievement of a British athlete this year. Also to include a gold in the Olympic time trial its been Wiggins' year.Me too.
