I was really impressed with Kevin Sinfield at hooker when he played there for England a few years back. Yes he's pushing on a bit but he's got the build and core skills to make that position his own even at England level. It's his vision, leadership and commitment that stands him out as a player and those qualities should be transferred to the number 9 position on a more permanent basis.
He's not a Keiron Cunningham but his passing and distribution is crisp.
It's something I'd like to see but don't think it'll happen.
I'd like to see Kevin Sinfield play more at hooker, especially for England.

No,all Sinfield can do is kick,he's an average player at best,should be nowhere near the England setup,it's his fault we have beaten the Aussies in years,etc,etc,etc

Got to disagree on the point in question, but I will concede that possibly, Sinfield did have his best game for England from that position. However if I remember correctly, didn't he play there for a second match and had little or no impact then in the game?
I think that if he is still in anything like this seasons form then the omission of another Leeds player from the sub's bench, would be criminal. The one for the sub hooking spot should be Rob Burrows.
Against any opposition he has the speed to create from the dummy half spot and can be a devastating back-up player also.
If we have had the chance, over the past forty years of a truly genuine Super-sub, in the mold of so many the aussies have been able to call on, then Rob has truly developed that potential eversince MacDermott first used him there.

Agree on that, obviously he's had to adjust his mindset a bit but I think Burrow is playing some of his best rugby right now. Am actually quite excited about 2013 and the World Cup, of course I expect the Aussies to win, but am reasonably optimistic that neither England nor the Kiwis will just roll over. That final is going to be something special.

Mcnamarra has spent the last 3 years building a team around the same 1,6,7,9 spine......he's not going to change it with only 2 games left before the world cup..

KS was good at hooker and I remember thinking Leeds might deploy him there rather than 6 or 13. But to put him there just before a World Cup with extremely limited experience is exactly the sort of thing that McNamara will get destroyed for if England do badly. I wouldn't risk it. Oh, and we have James Roby.

the likes of cameron smith and isaac luke would tear him apart, at least roby will be able to compete with them on the same level.....the only other hooker that should be called up is leeds number 9 paul mcshane.

Could having Roby at 13 work with Sinfield at number 9? Would be great to have a ball playing 13 who can get through 40 tackles a game. Just a thought like although it would mean playing 2 players out of position.

I'd agree whole-heartedly.
No one is saying Kevin Sinfield isn't a gifted 6/13- his record, and especially that being a skipper speaks for itself.
However at International level at 6 he isn't quick enough, or creative enough. And similarly at 13 he doesn't pose enough of a physical threat.
The conundrum though is that his organisational skills and kicking game is that good he HAS to be in the team. This is further complicated by having Gareth Widdop developing rapidly and showing he cuts it as 6 in the NRL. Some might say his job is made easier by having Cooper Cronk and Cam Smith inside him and Billy Slater behind him, but I think that is insulting to the lad and the talent he has. Craig Bellamy woould not pick him if he wasn't worth his jersey.
So Mcnamara's task is to pick a side- and by that I mean a 17- which will play in a certain way, with specific tactics that will give England the best chance of ending the domination of Aus/ NZ in major comps.
It may need something out of the box- try this.

1-Tomkins
6- Widdop
7- Myler/ Lomax/ Burrow/ A N Other
9- Sinfield
13-Burgess
After 20mins- bring a fresh Prop and Roby on, and move Burgess up to Prop.

Sinfield and Roby can then switch positions as required to suit the set moves/ sets of six that McNamara wants to use.
Sinfield is a class player who would take this in his stride and I believe would revel in the additional responsibility and challenge it would present.
It might not be something like the above but we've got to outwit the Aussies and Kiwis and somewhere in the mix Kevin Sinfield is part of that.
He and the other players I listed also have the benefit of a pack that is man enough to match if not better the Aussies and Kiwis- there is also strength in depth in that area.
It will tale something novel and new like this to fox the Super Powers- people have said for a long time we should play our game and not impersonate the NRL sides. I'd agree- lets try something a bit different and be adventurous as we have the players to do it who I believe are ready to deliver.

sorry but i would rather have a specialist hooker than one who last played in the position a few years ago, we have roby, mcillorum, mcshane. so why play a loose forwards at hooker? it's like the aussies deciding to play gallen at 9 and smith at 13.........................bloody laughable!!

To be honest the players interchange positions so much in a game I'm not sure the number on the back is that important as we seem to make out.
Leave Sinfield where he plays his club rugby (six) and let him direct the team from there. Wether people agree or like it the team for the World Cup will be built around Sinfield as captain, and rightly so IMO, he is the best person for the job at this moment in time.

If I recall correctly, , the hooker plays right in the middle of the scrum. How would it make sense to have Sinfield taken out of the game in this way for each scrum?

Full back at loose on defence, hooker at loose on attack. Loose or hooker marking the stand off out of the scrum in the defensive line.
Lets not go into the whys and wherefores of rubbish scrims in league though.
My views on his position would be keep him where he is. Why does he need to be fast to be a stand off? There should be plenty of speedsters around him that he can get to do the running for him. Everyone says all he can do is kick, but lets face it, his passing isn't too shabby either.

Inglis won't likely play in the position he plays at club level. Gallen isn't played at 13 is he? Cronk and Thurston both play at 7 the majority of the time.
